AP Configuration: What Prameters are downloaded when the AP boots?

Just want to start a Thread regarding AP Configuration.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
From User Guide:
Aruba APs are thin APs, which means their primary function is to receive and transmit electromagnetic signals;
other WLAN processing is left to the controller.

When powered on, an Aruba AP locates its host controller through a variety of methods, including the
- Aruba Discovery Protocol (ADP),
- Domain Name Service (DNS), or
- Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP).

When an AP locates its host controller, it automatically builds a secure Generic Routing Encapsulation (GRE) tunnel (Figure 2) to the controller.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The AP then downloads its software and configuration from the controller through the tunnel.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Here we have the statement to think about.

The AP downloads its configuration from the controller
Can somebody post a detailed information what is exactly downloaded when the AP boots?
In other words: Which Profiles or detailed Config Parameters are transfered from the Controller
to the AP and stays after power off? (AP NVRAM)
Are there differences regarding AP Types? (Note: a,b,g,n)

The major question is: Are FW Definitions transfered to the AP and stays in the AP locally
or do all User Roles, Policies and Rules handled always on the Controller.

The same on RAP. Think about the different
Remote AP Operation
a) always
b) backup
c) persistant
d) standard

Remote AP Forward Mode Settings for 802.11 Frames
a) Bridge Mode
b) Split-Tunnel
c) Tunnel

That would be great.

Re: AP Configuration: What Prameters are downloaded when the AP boots?

Hello,

First of it the AP need Information for his boot process and Informations about the Controller where he should connect. This Informations are Enviroment Variables. This are the only Parameters that are stored on the AP. You can show them with the printenv command. Example:

apboot> printenv
boardname=Muscat
autostart=yes
baudrate=9600
bootcmd=boot ap
bootdelay=2
bootfile=mips.ari
ethaddr=00:0b:86:c6:28:9a
name=AP70 MeshPoint
group=APGroup_Mesh_Point_with_Client_Power17_Channel6
fqln=AP70 MeshPoint.Floor 1.New Building.Weisser Riese
servername=aruba-master
a_antenna=0
g_antenna=0
auto_prov_id=0
mesh_role=1

After boot and connecting to the Controller the Ap loads some more Informations:

BSSID 00:1a:1e:ed:38:c0
LMS IP x.x.x.x
Master IP y.y.y.y
Mode AP Mode
QBSS Probe Response Allow Access
Native VLAN ID 1
SAP MTU 1500 bytes
Heartbeat DSCP 0
High throughput enable (radio) Disabled

Beacon Period 100 msec
Transmit Power 14 dBm

802.11g Transmit Rates 11 12 18 24 36 48 54
Station Ageout Time 1000 sec

DSCP mapping for WMM background AC N/A
Hide SSID Disabled
Deny_Broadcast Probes Disabled
Local Probe Response Enabled
Battery Boost Disabled
Maximum Transmit Failures 32
BC/MC Rate Optimization Disabled
VLAN 2
Forward mode tunnel

You can see that there are no Informations that are confidential.
After that the AP builds a Tunnel for every configured WLAN to the Controller.
The tunnels are used to send all Traffic to the Controller.

On the Controller all Traffic is decrypted. After that it is passing the Firewallengine, ARP Table,.......

The remote AP saves configuration information that allows it to
operate autonomously using one or more SSIDs in local bridging mode while
supporting open association or encryption with PSKs.

1.) When the AP are installed the first time, it has the factory default settings.
2.) With the AP Provisioning you load up basic Parameters like
servername=aruba-master
name=00:1a:1e:c1:48:90 fl0
group=default
and this will be stored in AP Flash or NVRAM
3.) Question: During the additional Configuration like AP Profile, RAP IKE and others
The save and apply buttons are loading additional Parameters to the AP
You don't need to reboot the AP's. Is that right?
Do you have a list and syntax of all "setenv variables"? The internal help would not give more details.
4.) When the AP start booting it get's his IP Address and Gateway, so the AP is able to establish the Controller communication.

5.) Question: Now it load more Configuration Parameters from the Controller.
Refer Page 119-122 in ArubaOS3_4UG.pdf
Table 24 AP Configuration Function Overview

- Wireless LANs - SSIDs **from VAP Profile ??**
- AP operation **from xx Profile ??**
- QoS (Quality of Service) **from QOS Profile ??**
- RF management **from RF Profile ??**
- Intrusion Detection System (IDS) **from IDS Profile ??**
- Mesh **from Mesh Profile ??**

But no FW Roles, Policies and Rules
That means the User Authentication is done always on the controller. The bridging
between WLAN an VLAN is done internally, except the bridged guest network on RAP without Authenication.

What happen when the RAP loose his power and no controller is available?
Is there any local communication possible on RAP after power loss?

The Environment size: 219/131068 bytes tells you about the config size.
When you store more Paramerter there are less memory available?
AP's have different Environment sizes:

Ask about AP121

Can somebody tell me, if exists file mips64.ari to download?? I have an AP with image failure:

Controller address: 172.20.8.200
Using en0 device
TFTP from server 172.20.8.200; our IP address is 172.20.8.254
Filename 'mips64.ari'.
Load address: 0x1600000
Loading: *
TFTP error: 'File not found' (1)
Giving up...

Version of Code?

What version of ArubaOS code is this on the controller?

Re: AP Configuration: What Prameters are downloaded when the AP boots?

a_ant_gain=90d42476b4bac29d885c7c822bc54dd47179017 70030x002
g_ant_gain=90d42476b4bac29d885c7c822bc54dd47179017 70030x002

what are these two parameters?

they seems to indicate the gain value of the antenna.

what rule for these two parameters?

Re: AP Configuration: What Prameters are downloaded when the AP boots?

These variables are set automatically if the AP has Internal/Included Antenna. If the AP has external antenna then these variables are set when you provision the AP under the Antenna Parameters section.
Cheers
James
