Airheads Local - New York Metro - March 14th, 2012

All,

The next Airheads Local in NY is on March 14th, 2012, hope you all can make it, we have a great agenda planned that includes discussions on some very important topics that are affecting our customers today, but also live demonstrations of the solutions discussed.

Agenda:

With the proliferation of mobile devices, there are many challenges that need to be overcome in a scalable and secure manner.  We will take a look at two specific issues during this event:

- Mobile devices are helping to increase the productivity of your employees.  One of the primary set of applications that is driving these productivity gains on these devices are collaborative tools like VoIP, Messaging, and Video.  The problem is, how do you provide QoS for multimedia applications on a mobile device that does voice, video, email and web, on a single SSID?  Port/VLAN/SSID based schemes will not work since the device attached to the SSID is running real time and non real time applications.  We cannot rely on standards like 802.11e/WMM since the application programmers may not have written to that API to expose the QoS/CoS of the Voice or Video flow and it will look the same as a email or web flow.  Prime example of this is an iOS device running Facetime, while iOS supports WMM, all traffic is marked as best effort.  We will discuss, and demonstrate, how Aruba's application aware firewall can be leveraged to detect voice, video, and UC applications, and prioritize this traffic over the non real time applications, on a single SSID.

- Knowing that letting a user use their own device on the network could make them more productive, how do we control who can use their own device on the network and how do we ensure that their is a consistent configuration for these devices as well as a unique ID for this device that can be revoked if it is lost or stolen?  Typically this task will fall ondesktop operations or the helpdesk, which will lead to slow adoption, and increased burden on these teams.  The other issue is how do you ensure that your users are not already using these devices on the network.  We will demonstrate how you can leverage device profiling/fingerprinting to gain knowledge of what type of device a user is logging in with and based on this information, leverage the Aruba firewall to restrict access based on "Who and What" as opposed to just "Who" on a single SSID.  We will demonstrate how a self service portal can be created for users that bring their own devices to register their device and automatically be pushed a standard config and ID that will then allow them to use this device on the network, thereby decreasing dramatically the time it takes to get these devices onto the network securely but also reducing the burden on the helpdesk and desktop operations.

After the two topics above, we will follow with a Q&A roundtable discussion on any topics that you would like to discuss with regards to your mobility needs, concerns, etc.  Looking forward to a lively conversation!

See you then!
