Aruba Instant 6.4.2.0-4.1.1.0, 802.11r and iPads

[ Edited ]

So, is anyone running this is production?

We have a bunch of iPad 3s, with the latest iOS, and an SSID dedicated to them, but, eventually, they start to have issues connecting to the network—WPA passwords are rejected or the devices often report they are unable to join.  While I understand 802.11r is not very valuable with WPA, I have since removed it, and left 802.11k, and things seem to be faring better, but I’ll need more time to be certain (and I can’t believe Aruba didn’t test 802.11r with iPads).

DanielM,

The reality is that Aruba does test with 802.11r and 802.11k.  Apple makes changes on their own as well that could affect connectivity or support for both of those standards so it is always a moving target.  I would uncheck both to normalize your network and avoid issues with other clients that do not support those standards

First, I would use WPA2-AES because WPA does not support 802.11n speeds.  If you have 802.11n or 802.11ac access points, you would not be utilizing those capabilities or speeds.  Also have your access points powered between 12 and 18 so that roaming is optimal.  These suggestions will go a much longer way than enabling 802.11r and 802.11k in your environment.

Hey Colin—thanks for the prompt reply. I apologize for not being more clear, but we are using WPA2-AES (as should anyone with a modern network) and have had our min and max transmit power reduced for quite a while now.

EDIT:  I see that you are asking if anyone is running this in production.  I will let them answer.

I typically do not run this in production due to compatibility issues. iOS 8 also has its own set of wireless issues right now outside of that.
