750 iPod Clients in one Room

Hello,

we have an conference room installation with 10 AP125. The room is 22 * 54 Meters

The plan, we want to use 750 iPod 3G (8GB) with an special app to vote in the conference.

Controller: 4602 x 2 (master master)
AP125 in Conference Room
AP105 in the other Floors and Rooms.

The iPod only have a/g Interface.

ARM is enabled and APs are located in RF Plan correctly.

The APs standing in a distance of ca. 5-10 Meters on all four walls of the conference room.

Anything to hint?
Maybe: disable AM in Case of ARM, enable only 54 MBit?

If the client devices (iPads) support a/g , then 'must-haves' would be
ARM 2.0 BAND-STEERING and SPECTRUM LOAD BALANCING.

BAND-STEERING --> will ensure that a maximum number of clients will
migrate over to 5 GHz, where there is generally cleaner air, and thus
better performance.

SPECTRUM LOAD BALANCING --> will ensure that clients are balanced
between the frequencies (channels) offered by the APs based upon channel
utilization. By distributing the users over several channels,
efficiency of the Client -- AP channel goes up dramatically.

You should go take a look at the high density VRD published a couple of weeks back, it talks exactly to this scenario, though it expects the majority of the clients to have 5 GHz. In your case you are actually going to be in an interesting situation as you will only have 2.4 GHz capable devices...

Band Steering Capable ?

Andy makes a good point to make sure that the clients you are looking to support have dual-band radios within them.

If not, spectrum load balancing still works A-OK, whereas Band-Steering won't buy you anything.

A quick way to know how many clients are dual-band capable ?

Run this command from the controller's CLI: show ap band-steering-clients

Example:
(ArubaHQ_Calgary) #show ap band-steering-clients

thanks for reply!

today we starting the first big test, some small tests are successfull but not really correct because the time between the votes are to big.

today we have 40 people to vote simultaneous with 10 or 15 iPods per person.

i will report!

Band steering ???

Hello,
I think band steering don't helps here because all clients are 2,4GHz only. The only way is to configure load sharing on a optimal way.

The other question is, if it makes sense to use ARM in this specific scenario because of the large number of APs per square meter.

Just a quick comment on the does it 'make sense' to use ARM in this deployment.

After almost 4 years in using ARM in 100+ deployments, big small, dense or sparse. It has yet to let me down vs. the benefits gained ... the dense deployment needed to support the high density of devices is a key environment what ARM 2.0 was built to address ;-)

the yesterday test is horrobile. only a small group of clients are able to connect to the wlan. at this time, ARM was disable (maintain).

we testet it with 460 iPods. A huge group has no connectivity to the wlan and the logfile was full like this:

now we disable the wpa2 auth and have an open ssid. also we upgrade the app of all ipods to wait until theres a wlan connection.

today i have activatet ARM (single-band) and recieve all the time:

currently the conference is running.

some iPods are connectet but no voting with the full count of 750 clients has startet yet. we wait for the voiting at this afternoon.

following was changed between the alcatel support session with palani:




For your information, after i have assigned all aps to the conference room (now 12 APs) i have enabled ARM in Multi-Band fpr 10 Minutes and changed the min Power to 18.
