Captive portal redirect...must be with DNS?

Does the captive portal must have the DNS in order to automatically redirect the page? Anyway to have page redirect without DNS entry?

Re: Captive portal redirect...must be with DNS?

The browser sends an HTTP GET request only after it gets an IP address from DNS
i.e. For eg: If you type in www.google.com, the browser does not send a HTTP GET right away but waits for the DNS to return an IP address for www.google.com
When the DNS returns an IP address, the browser will send HTTP GET for that IP address 173.194.33.49 which is then redirected to the captive portal page

If you want to be redirected without the DNS, then you will have to type in an IP address in the address bar of the browser for e.g. http://1.1.1.1

This will redirect you to captive portal without DNS.

No, the request to the controller must be http or https. If we redirect DNS to the web server, the client may not even have an open browser. Even if they did, the client would not understand why it sent a DNS request and got an http redirect in response.

I am not sure if I understand your question correctly.

I am assuming you meant that you want the DNS server address on the client populated with controller IP address. That would not work, since controller would not be performing DNS.
