Huge amount of data being transferred between WLC and RAPs

Hi all,

Last week we added a redundant 3200 controller to the existing one and upgraded the OS to 5.0.2.0.

Ever since there has been a huge amount of traffic between the RAPs and the WLCs - it's completly swamping our network (all UDP 4500 traffic).

Would anyone have any idea what's causing this?

Thanks,

Neal

Re: Huge amount of data being transferred between WLC and RAPs

If you have APs configured as RAPs, Any UDP 4500 traffic would have to be coming over the internet first, and then entering your local LAN. In that respect, the traffic flowing through your network would be rate-limited by your shared internet connection. When you say flooding, how are you measuring this traffic?

Re: Huge amount of data being transferred between WLC and RAPs

Hi,

We are measuring the traffic via Netflow. it is a huge jump from anything we saw before the upgrade. The traffic is rate-limited alright, but the problem is that it is still congesting the network.

It appears that the RAPs are pulling data from the WLC periodically. Each one is pulling around 60MB in a ten minute period.

Could they be stuck in an update loop or similar?

See if you can single out one access point with this behavior and find out. If your WLANs and/or wired connections on the rap are fully tunneled, management traffic as well as data travel over UDP 4500. It could be user traffic that is causing that spike.
