Issues with DHCP option 252 in Aruba OS 3.4.2 serving proxy.pac location

Hi,

I'm sure that I had this working in an earlier version of the OS, but I cannot seem to get this working in this OS.

I am trying to set the proxy.pac file from the DHCP server on the Aruba A620 controller using Aruba OS 3.4.2.

I can see the option being delivered to a wireless client when Internet Explorer is launched, but then it seems to ignore it and never contact the controller for the actual settings.

If I use a Microsoft DHCP server, the option gets through.

The option that I am using is option 252 text "http://192.168.200.20:80/upload/default/proxy.pac" as the option.

The only difference in the packet is that the length of that part of the packet is 50 on the Microsoft server, but is only 49 on the Aruba controller. Looking at the packet, there is an extra character (possible a space) after the MS one, but not after the Aruba one.

I have tried altering the Aruba config to
option 252 text "http://192.168.200.20:80/upload/default/proxy.pac "
but this then alters the format of the packet to show a trailing space inside the quotes (not shown in the MS one) and leads to the same result.

I have also tried to use
option 252 text "http://192.168.200.20:80/upload/default/proxy.pac\n"
but again, to no avail.

Can anyone shed any light on this problem, as I had it working on an alternative controller (which I don't have anymore), but cannot get it to work now.

I don't want to have to use a dedicated MS DHCP server, as this will be service my guest network and want it to remain not-routable

Thanks

Open a case

There was a bug where the Aruba Controller added a space and it should have been fixed. See this thread: http://airheads.arubanetworks.com/vBulletin/showthread.php?t=1435

Open a case to ensure this was not reversed inadvertently in 3.4.2

Re: Issues with DHCP option 252 in Aruba OS 3.4.2 serving proxy.pac location

Hi rjropes,

I've got a customer with the same issue on the same OS version. When the bug was previously present that added white space after the option 252 URL you could see in the dhcp database..

Can you do the following on your controller and post back the results?

# show ip dhcp database

Or have you heard back from Aruba confirming that the bug has reappeared?

Re: Issues with DHCP option 252 in Aruba OS 3.4.2 serving proxy.pac location

Hi

Here is it

# guestpool
subnet 192.168.200.0 netmask 255.255.255.0 {
default-lease-time 14400;
max-lease-time 14400;
option vendor-class-identifier "ArubaAP";
option vendor-encapsulated-options "10.163.193.205";
option routers 192.168.200.20;
option user-option-252 code 252 = text;
option user-option-252 "http://192.168.200.20:80/upload/custom/default/proxy.pac";
range 192.168.200.1 192.168.200.19;
range 192.168.200.21 192.168.200.254;
authoritative;

And this is the running config for it too:
ip dhcp pool guestpool
default-router 192.168.200.20
lease 0 4 0
option 252 text "http://192.168.200.20:80/upload/custom/default/proxy.pac"
network 192.168.200.0 255.255.255.0
authoritative

i've opened up a call with Aruba, and am just sending my logs over today

Thanks

Looks like a slightly different issue. Will you post back how you get on with support?

Re: Issues with DHCP option 252 in Aruba OS 3.4.2 serving proxy.pac location

Hi,

Well it looks like there is a problem which could be something slightly different from last time.

Aruba have informed me that there is an issue with Windows XP SP3 clients having problems with this feature when the DHCP server puts out option 43 (vendor specific) flag.

There is no way to turn this off in the current code, and they have written it into future code. Unfortunately, at this time the code isn't stable to run, so will have to wait until then.

Thanks

possible solution

Fixed

Just to let you know that this was due to a problem with XP SP3 not being able to use the DHCP auto configuration option when option43 (vendor specific) is being used.
Turning this off with no vendor-class-identified resolves the issue.

This feature is broken in the OS that I was using though, and is resolved in 3.4.5.2
