Mobile clients *sometimes* not connecting properly

This is a weird one.
WPA2 encrypted network with a captive portal. But some clients we use MAC authentication to avoid having to login to the portal (mobile devices). My Android device is one of them.

Often times I'll connect fine, but sometimes I don't. I'll see the phone say it's connected to the SSID, then 'obtaining IP address from ', then back to 'Scanning'. It'll cycle through this a few times, then say failed, then start all over.

On the controller, I can see my mobile device listed. If I do a #aaa user delete mac , my phone will then connect fine.

I'll lose connection again if I roam and latch onto another AP.

It's become increasingly infuriating.

Unfortunately I don't know all the tools to help diagnose this issue. Does anyone have any thoughts?

One 5000 master controller and two 6000 locals, all running ArubaOS 3.3.2.19-FIPS. Half of our AP61s LMS_IP point to one 6000, half to the other.

Re: Mobile clients *sometimes* not connecting properly

Just tested...

I'm connected with my Android. I turn off WiFi. I turn WiFi back on. It won't get an IP address again until I remove my Android's entry from the user-table.

Mobile clients *sometimes* not connecting properly

Basic Troubleshooting
1. Put your device in debug logging on the controller: conf t, logging level debugging user-debug your-device-mac

2. Simulate the failure

3. Now look at the logs: show log user-debug all | include your-mac-address

This is a great thing to do prior to calling TAC, as they will eventually ask you to do this.

Let us know what you find!

Re: Mobile clients *sometimes* not connecting properly

Sweet! Thanks for the debugging tip. I knew it was possible, just not how to go about it.

Now, can you help make some sense of this gobbeldy gook?

Here's the log of my mobile trying unsuccessfully to associate and connect to the network:

I'm still looking them over, but I wanted to get the logs up here as soon as I could.

One glaring difference out of the gate, is that in the first log, I'm seeing the station has an IP of 0.0.0.0; obviously a problem. Even while the mobile is not connecting, the user table shows it having a valid IP. Observe (this is before deleting the 'bogus' entry):

(NatickAruba6000-2) (config) # show user

Users
-----
IP MAC Name Role Age(d:h:m) Auth VPN link AP name Roaming Essid/Bssid/Phy Profile
---------- ------------ ------ ---- ---------- ---- -------- ------- ------- --------------- -------

So it appears that the user-table has my mobile at 172.16.1.120, while the logs seem to think my mobile's IP address is 0.0.0.0. After a bit, the logs show a of a Deauth of the station giving an Unspecified Failure. While that's not very helpful, it's probably because the station has an invalid IP?

So I guess I need to figure out why the mobile comes in as 0.0.0.0, and then doesn't get a DHCP address...

Oh, and I notice these settings: Mobility service ON, HA Discovery on Association Off, Fastroaming Disabled. Should any of these be tweaked?

Whew. Coffee time.

Similar issue

I'm experiencing what I feel is a similar issue with an iPhone 4 with iOS 5. My Desktop Mac running Lion will connect and stay connected without an issue on an AP and I can't seem to get a thing running on my iPhone. I turn on WIFI and fire it back up and it will work for a few seconds then stop.

Here are some of my logs.

Re: Mobile clients *sometimes* not connecting properly

I do believe that is similar to the issue that I am having with iPads as well.

I may have just figured out a work-around. However, this needs to be tested further. I don't know what the ramifications of changing this setting might have on other clients.

Here's what I'm looking at:

(host) #show wlan ssid-profile remote
......
Station Ageout Time 1000 sec

Now, decreasing this setting too far will surely have a negative impact on wireless VoIP. You really don't want those to age out that quickly. However, by aging out the mobile clients faster, they may re-authenticate and DHCP correctly. I'm not saying this is the answer, but definitely a direction to look into and play with in the lab.

I'll test it out and let you guys know what I find.

Zach

Re: Mobile clients *sometimes* not connecting properly

Do you think this could be some kind of bug? Has anyone opened a support ticket to address it?

Mobile clients *sometimes* not connecting properly

I do have a TAC case open for this issue.

I'm trying again to replicate the issue to test some changes I made to the settings.

I don't have anything concrete yet. I'll post once I do.

Re: Mobile clients *sometimes* not connecting properly

We just got an AirWave appliance. It's sitting on my desk, and I'm in the process of setting it up. I noticed in the users section a lot of mobile devices (Apple, Motorola etc. MACs) are showing up as having IP addresses of 0.0.0.0. Is there a way I can set up the controllers to not allow these devices to associate? Or some way to automatically remove 0.0.0.0 MAC addresses from the user-table? Or something along those lines?

Thanks,

Re: Mobile clients *sometimes* not connecting properly

A bit more info:

When I'm connected and everything is working ok, if I roam with my mobile to another AP, the mobile stays connected, but I can't get any data through. I open a browser but can't get to any webpages.

Now, I've found that if I set a static IP address on the mobile, both this problem and the problem in the OP go away. I can always connect and roam with no problem. Leads me to think native there's something wrong with the way DHCP is handling these clients...
