COTD: show voice client-status

The "show voice client-status" command has been around since the 3.3.x days, where it was only included with the voice module. In 3.4 and on, all the features of the voice module have been integrated into the base license. The show voice client status command will show you the status of all voice client traffic going through the controller at a time:

(M3.arubanetworks.com) #show client-status

Calls are identified by the IP address, mac address, client extension, voice ALG type, and whether it is registered with the voice server, at all. It will also tell you if the client is idle or on a call, the BSSID of the AP that he is associated to, as well as the SSID and the name of the AP that he is on. Also indicated is whether the call is on a remote AP, wired or wireless.

You can also use the command to filter by BSSID, ESSID, client extension, ip address, voip protocol, or station:

(M3.arubanetworks.com) #show voice client-status ?
active-only Show only active voice clients
bssid Filter on bssid
essid Filter on essid
extn Filter on client extension
ip Filter on a specific ip address of a client
proto Filter on a specific voip protocol - sip, svp, noe,
sccp, vocera, h323
sta Filter on a specific STA
| Output Modifiers

For anyone who is considering deploying voice or is currently doing so, this command is essential to see your voice client usage. This is all made possible by Aruba's built-in application awareness that not only allows you to look at and restrict traffic based on source, destination and port, but it can look into applications like voice and return status information about whether the client is currently in a call or not.

Re: COTD: show voice client-status

Colin - Quick question. I have H.323 voice clients on RAPs (running RN3.1.9 w/ voice license), I never see any of that info. Is there a limitation in the RN code or the controller inspecting H.323 traffic that would not allow me to see that info?

Maybe I'm just not doing something correctly....

h323 alg wired rap

Is this a wired port on the RAP? Is the wired port tunnel or split tunnel? The full h323 support for voice stats, identification and application awareness on the wired port on a rap is only available starting in ArubaOS 5.0. You can certainly pass the traffic correctly wit an allow all in RN, but we cannot show the stats or dynamically open the h323 ports until 5.0

Re: COTD: show voice client-status

Most are wired IP phones, but a few are wifi IP phones and everything is full tunnel.

Run 5.0 Pilot

Mike,

If you can, run 5.0 as a pilot with the same phones and see if they come up when you run that command. The support should be there in 5.0
