Controller Based WLANs

Does an Aruba 651 controller require an AP license for a mesh portal or point to broadcast an SSID that is specified in the virtual AP?

Product and Software: This article applies to the Aruba 651 controller that runs ArubaOS 5.0 and later.

By default, an Aruba controller that runs ArubaOS 5.0 or later has 64 indoor mesh licenses.

When the controller is used in a mesh configuration, it requires AP licenses for a portal or a point to broadcast an SSID specified in the VAP.

You can provision any AP as a mesh portal or point, but to broadcast SSID APs, an AP license is required.

However, before ArubaOS 5.0, no separate AP license was required. The Indoor Mesh AP license was sufficient for mesh nodes to broadcast SSIDs.
