How to configure Cisco IP Phone 7921G to connect to an Aruba AP with a PSK SSID?

Jul 14, 2014 12:31 PM

Environment  :

Any Aruba OS
Any Aruba Controller
Any Aruba Access Point

Cisco IP Phone 7921G (also 7925G) is unable to connect to an Aruba AP broadcasting a PSK SSID.

Need to select the right authentication method on the phone settings.

Consider we would like to use the Cisco IP Phone (applies 7921G and 7925G) with a Aruba AP broadcasting a WPA-PSK-TKIP SSID.  Please check the supported authentication methods on the phone settings.  Some of these settings differ based on the phone model.  Examples include the the following:

7925G: WEP/LEAP/EAP-FAST/EAP-TLS/PEAP/Auto AKM.
Reference: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/7925g/7_0/english/administration/guide/7925cfgu.html
Note: The description of the "Auto (AKM)" method is as follows:
"Auto (AKM)—Automatic authenticated key management in which the phone selects the AP and type of key management scheme, which includes WPA, WPA2, WPA-Pre-shared key, WPA2-Pre-shared key, or CCKM (which uses a wireless domain server (WDS))."

7921G: Open, Open+WEP, Shared+WEP, LEAP, EAP-FAST, Auto (AKM)
Reference: http://www.cisco.com/en/US/docs/voice_ip_comm/cuipph/7921g/5_0_1/english/administration/guide/7921cfgu.html
Note: "Auto (AKM)—Automatic authenticated key management using:

–WPA, WPA2 (requires a username and password)

–WPA-Pre-shared key, WPA2-Pre-shared key (requires a passphrase/pre-shared key)

–CCKM (requires a username and password)"

As evident from the descriptions provided here, we must ensure to use "Auto (AKM)" mode on the both the above models to configure the IP Phone with a PSK SSID, say with a WPA-PSK-TKIP SSID.
