Controller Based WLANs

Maximum number of IP Multicast Group members and error about "could not allocate IP multicast group member"

What do the following error messages mean?

Aruba pim[1821]: <204203> <ERRS> <Aruba 192.168.1.2> Could not add IP multicast group member 192.168.10.11 to group 239.0.0.55
Aruba pim[1821]: <204221> <WARN> <Aruba 192.168.1.2> Could not allocate IP multicast group member, limit of 1024 reached.

Environment  :

M3 or 72xx Aruba Controllers
Aruba OS 6.2.1.3
Any Access Point.

We see a lot of the following error messages repeatedly on the Controller:

Aruba pim[1821]: <204203> <ERRS> <Aruba 192.168.1.2>  Could not add IP multicast group member 192.168.10.11 to group 239.0.0.55
Aruba pim[1821]: <204221> <WARN> <Aruba 192.168.1.2> Could not allocate IP multicast group member, limit of 1024 reached.

This is exceeding the limit of the number multicast group members irrespective of the number of groups on an M3 Controller.

Depending on the requirement of the maximum number multicast group members, we may choose to use an M3 Controller (allows upto 1024 members) or a 72xx Controller (allows upto 8k members).  The maximum multicast group members are counted irrespective of the number of multicast groups.

If see a lot of the following error messages repeatedly on an M3 Controller:

Aruba pim[1821]: <204203> <ERRS> <Aruba 192.168.1.2>  Could not add IP multicast group member 192.168.10.11 to group 239.0.0.55
Aruba pim[1821]: <204221> <WARN> <Aruba 192.168.1.2> Could not allocate IP multicast group member, limit of 1024 reached

This means we are exceeding the limit of the maximum number multicast group members irrespective of the number of groups.  The maximum number of multicast members that are recommended based on testing by our Engineering Team is 1024 on an M3 Controller.  The same limit is increased to 8000 on a 72xx Controller.

We have a configuration option to modify the maximum members allowed per multicast group on our Controller.  However the cumulative limit of members from all the groups should not exceed the platform limit (1k for M3 and 8k for 72xx).

(Aruba) (config) #ip igmp
(Aruba) (config-igmp) #max-members-per-group <new-maximum>
