Controller Based WLANs

The local controller shows different values for licenses after failover? (centralized licensing)

Q:

With centralized licensing enabled, local controller shows different values for license after failover ?

A:

Below are few outputs to verify this setup:

Master-Local setup with VRRP in between them. Master has 16 AP/PEF/RFP license installed on it and local has no inbuilt/added license installed on it.
Centralized licensing is enabled and 3 APs terminate on the Master and nothing on Local controller.

(Master) #   show license server-table

License Server Table
--------------------
Service Type                                        Aggregate Lic.  Used Lic.  Remaining Lic.
------------                                        --------------  ---------  --------------
Access Points                                       16              3          13
Next Generation Policy Enforcement Firewall Module  16              3          13
RF Protect                                          16              3          13
xSec Module                                         0               0          0
Advanced Cryptography                               0               0          0

Available license count shows up as 13 on both Master and Local.

Once the Master goes down, 3 APs fail over to the local, on the local controller we see below data,

show license client-table

Built-in limit: 0
License Client Table
--------------------
Service Type                                        System Limit  Server Lic.  Used Lic.  Contributed Lic.  Remaining Lic.
------------                                        ------------  -----------  ---------  ----------------  --------------
Access Points                                       2048          16           3          0                 16
Next Generation Policy Enforcement Firewall Module  2048          16           3          0                 16
RF Protect                                          2048          16           3          0                 16
xSec Module                                         4096          0            0          0                 0
Advanced Cryptography                               4096          0            0          0                 0

(Local) (config) #show ap license-usage

AP Licenses
-----------
Type                      Number
----                      ------
AP Licenses               19
RF Protect Licenses       19
PEF Licenses              19
Overall AP License Limit  19

AP Usage
--------
Type             Count
----             -----
Active CAPs      3
Standby CAPs     0
RAPs             0
Remote-node APs  0
Tunneled nodes   0
Total APs        3

Remaining AP Capacity
---------------------
Type  Number
----  ------
CAPs  16
RAPs  16

Total license on the Local controller becomes 19 and available license becomes 16.
The sum of installed + number of APs (UP) is shown as total license on the local controller.
And once the Master comes back up, the values are shown as expected.

Explanation:
After failover, show license client-table showed the remaining count was 16.  This is expected and required to ensure the licenses are redistributed during failover.
When client lost connectivity to sever after 3 consecutive heartbeats (90 seconds), the used license count from the server was added to the available count: 13 (remaining before failover) + 3 (used by server before master went down) = 16.
The "show license-usage ap" showed remaining licenses was 16, which matched the "show license client-table" outputs, since 3 were used, the total became 19.
Once master came back up, everything looks how we would expect.
