Controller Based WLANs

What does the "drop-mcast" option do?

Aruba Employee

Product and Software: This article applies to ArubaOS 3.3 and later.

When the Voice Services Module (VSM) license is installed, the "drop-mcast" option is configurable under the ssid profile.

This function is useful in these environments:

  •  High number of clients in a large subnet.
  •  Clients renew DHCP when they are roaming every time.
  •  Battery capacity of the clients is limited.
  •  Clients do not use any broadcast-based protocols (for example, Windows Share).

When the "drop-mcast" option is enabled, all the unknown broadcast and multicast traffics egressing from the Access Point (AP) are dropped. You need to enable the "voip-proxy-arp" option for the "drop-mcast" option to work.

When this feature is enabled, downstream DHCP and ARP broadcast packets are automatically converted to unicast and forwarded to the valid client.

Example:

To enable the "voip-proxy-arp" option from the command line interface (CLI)

(Lab)#(config)firewall voip-proxy-arp

To enable the "drop-mcast" option:

wlan ssid-profile <Name>  drop-mcast
