Controller Based WLANs

Why are clients not able to connect to data rates higher than 54 Mb/s even with HT mode enabled?

Product and Software: This article applies to all Aruba controllers and ArubaOS 3.x and later.

As per the 802.11n standard, wireless clients with 802.11n supported will not connect at n data rate to an SSID that is not secure.

The 802.11n specification does not allow for higher rates using weak encryption such as WEP or TKIP. To gain higher rates, use either an open SSID or WPA2 AES encryption.

A few clients connect using a legacy IEEE 802.11g connection rather than failing to connect altogether, which complies with the IEEE 802.11n draft. These client drivers behave this way:

  • Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 5350
  • Intel WiMAX/WiFi Link 5150
  • Intel WiFi Link 5300
  • Intel WiFi Link 5100
  • Intel Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN
