What is SLB neighbor matching in Aruba Instant? How to configure and verify? What is the range that can be configured and its significance?

Jun 28, 2014 08:36 AM

Environment : This article applies to all Aruba Instant Access Points running Aruba InstantOS 6.2.1.0-3.3.0.0 or higher.

SLB Neighbor Matching is a configuration parameter under Spectrum Load Balancing functionality and is defined in percentage (%). This value is used in determining Virtual RF neighborhood.

The virtual RF neighborhoods are automatically created via ARM scanning, client density updates and neighbor exchanges. It lists all the density maps in the database, and compare to its own density map. If the two density maps are 75%+ match, the neighbor is in its own virtual RF neighborhood. The default value is 75%. A percentage value within the range of 20-100 can be specified.

SLB Neighbor Matching percentage is more significant as it determines if a neighbor is within same RF neighborhood or not.

  • This ensures that APs that are far away from the clients perspective do not belong to the virtual RF neighborhood, to avoid redirecting clients to a far away AP that is on a lightly loaded channel
  • APs in the virtual RF neighborhood participate in client load balancing using association responses to direct clients towards APs on less loaded channels

Below are the steps to configure from GUI:

  1. Login to web interface of IAP
  2. In the top-right menu, clicn on "RF"
  3. From the dropdown, select "Enabled" for Spectrum Load Balancing
  4. For further configuration parameters related to SLB, click on "Show Advance Options"
  5. Here, SLB calculating intervalSLB neighbor matching % and SLB Threshold can be configured.
  6. Once finish, click OK.

Below screenshots shows how to verify from GUI and CLI:

From GUI:
  1. Login to web interface of IAP
  2. In the top-right menu, Point to "More"
  3. From the dropdown, select "Support"
  4. From the "Command" dropdown, select "AP ARM Configuration"
  5. The "Target" dropdown, shows the list of Instant AP's in the cluster and thereby one can select the AP that the command has to run. Here, select the access point that has "(VC)" beside it. This Instant AP is the Virtial Controller for the cluster.
  6. Click on "Run" button.
