IAP virtual controller max capacity

In a full IAPs network, how many IAP can be managed from a virtual controller?

Re: IAP virtual controller max capacity

For IAP 92/93, the limit is 16 IAPs in a single virtual controller network.

For other IAP models, there isn't a limit as such, but our recommendation is to use network design best practices and WLAN design best practices to design the number of IAPs in a single Instant network. The same rules hold true here.

Is there a specific use case or deployment model that you are considering or is this a general question?

Re: IAP virtual controller max capacity

thanks for the prompt follow up.  We are working on a project in which a hotel has a limited budget and they asked for roaming.  So the Instant Access Point seems the right choice, but I would like to valide the following:
  • How many Instants APS you can connect together?
  • How many IAP’s you can manage at the same time?
  • How many IAPs you can use at MESH environment?
  1. Which AP models can be used in a mesh enviroment?
  2. The hotel asked for roaming.  I think their real requeriment is not roaming: a guest in a room goes downstairs to pool and when he opens his mobile device/notebook he should not be to authenticate again in the captive portal.  So:
    1. Can the clients roam between IAP in the same controller?
    2. Can the clients roam between IAPs in different controllers?
    3. How Aruba implement roaming, using 802.11r or any other propietary methof (to get faster handover)?
    4. According the requirement of the hotel, is this roaming or session persistence?  If it is the last one, how can we get it?
Thanks in advance.

Re: IAP virtual controller max capacity

We are working on a best practices, design guidelines and should have that out soon.
  • How many Instants APS you can connect together?

Like I mentioned earlier, there is no limit as such, but the number of IAPs in that Instant network, managed by a single virtual controller, depends on the RF and also the client density.

  • How many IAP’s you can manage at the same time?

Same as above.

  • How many IAPs you can use at MESH environment?

For mesh, it is 8 IAPs in total with two hops max between mesh points.

  1. Which AP models can be used in a mesh enviroment?

Dual radio IAPs only.

  1. The hotel asked for roaming.  I think their real requeriment is not roaming: a guest in a room goes downstairs to pool and when he opens his mobile device/notebook he should not be to authenticate again in the captive portal.  So:
    1. Can the clients roam between IAP in the same controller? <Shashi - Yes, we support Layer 2 roaming so client states will be distributed among IAPs in the same virtual controller network. IAP supposts PMK caching>
    2. Can the clients roam between IAPs in different controllers? <Shashi - We do not support Layer 3 roaming yet. However, we have seen that this roaming between virtual controller networks can be seamless depending on the client behavior.>
    3. How Aruba implement roaming, using 802.11r or any other propietary methof (to get faster handover)?
    4. According the requirement of the hotel, is this roaming or session persistence?  If it is the last one, how can we get it?<Shashi- I think the requirement sounds like that layer 2 roaming will be sufficient for this use case with session persistance. This usually depends on the client/device behavior as well>
We can discuss more depending on your requirement. Is there an RFP you have to fill out?
Thanks,

Re: IAP virtual controller max capacity

do you have a technical diferentiatios between IAP and Aruba Controller?

Re: IAP virtual controller max capacity

1.  For IAP 92/93 in the future can manage up to 32 units IAP?

2. Currently other model of IAP can support up to 32 units IAP?

3. Does Aruba IAP in the future can support inter Virtual-Controller roaming?

Re: IAP virtual controller max capacity

answers inline [SS]

1.  For IAP 92/93 in the future can manage up to 32 units IAP?

[SS] IAP 92/93 will only support up to 16 IAPs in one virtual controller network. There will not be any further changes to this number.

2. Currently other model of IAP can support up to 32 units IAP?

[SS] yes, other IAP models can support greater than 16 IAPs.

3. Does Aruba IAP in the future can support inter Virtual-Controller roaming?

[SS] Currently we are evaluating this requirement. Please send me your specific use case so it will help us in this process.

Thanks,

Re: IAP virtual controller max capacity

1. If in misture environment of Aruba IAP 92/93 and IAP 105, virtual controller can support up to how many IAP? For example, 14 units     IAP 105 and 4 units IAP 92/93. Can this workable?

2. What kind of information do you need for the inter virtual controller roaming?
