Can anybody tell me how comparable they are regarding management?

When I read the Ruckus datasheet, I see the following: "Each ZoneFlex R500 can be managed as a standalone AP through a Web-based GUI, using SNMP or through the Ruckus FlexMaster Wi-Fi remote
management system. Local management can also be performed using Ruckus’ Smart WLAN controllers.".

To me this reads that a single AP can be managed on their own, but if I have 2 or more APs I will have to invest in either the hardware or software appliance to manage it all.  Am I correct?

No.  You can also use the unleashed feature where an AP becomes a controller and thus can manage many APs as well as auto discover them in the same LAN.  This is good for up to 25 APs.
