    I have a client with two buildings each on different sides of a road. I need to setup a wireless bridge setup to extend the LAN to the other building. I need the setup to be basically as fast and reliable as the current 10/100 LAN of the main facility. We currently have CIsco SF300 managed switches in both buildings.

     

    There is currently a wireless bridge setup using some lower end equipment. The connection works ok with 2 people using it but once 3 people connect it gets really slow and basically unusable.

     

    The locations of the two access points would be about 150-200 feet apart. Both would be mounted externally most likely in a weather proof access point enclosure.

    Take a look at the MST200.  This is part of our AirMesh Outdoor AP family and are ruggedized / fully sealed so no enclosure is needed.  They are autonomous APs (no controller) and have a built-in, high-gain / directional antenna. They are single-radio 5GHz and are perfect for a P2P bridge link.

    I tested the MST200 bridge link at around 250 metres and the results were pretty poor - when we raised this with Aruba we were told that the link is designed for Km distances and that was the reason for the low link speed.

    I am trying to setup two Aruba MST200's to provide a wireless bridge from one building to another. Total distance will be about 250 feet. I have this setup at home so I can test and get it configured. I have two physical switches, one connected to the firewall (to simulate the main office), and another that is basically a stand alone switch. I have yet to get this working properly. 

     

    I am getting the blue lights on both MST200s, and I am able to ping each neighboring device. I cannot ping through the wireless bridge however. I was seeing green lights for the P/S and eth, now seeing red on the P/S. 

     

    Any suggestions for troubleshooting would be much appriciated. Ive spent countless hours on this now, and

    I have used the MST200 at a site where the buildings are about 330 Meters apart.  I configured the connection to use a 20Mhz channel width and receive a connection at 130Mb/s.  I could have used the 40Mhz width but using the 20Mhz allowed for me to configure using a channel with less interferance.  The far end does not have much of a load and is supporting VOIP connections to the far building as well as their internet connection.

    250 meters should have worked just fine with the MST200. The predicted throughput should be: HT20 TCP down 47 – 95Mbps, -59dB         HT40: TCP down 82-164Mbps, -59dB. 

     

    On really short links you may need to decrease the Tx power but at 250 meters that should not be necessary.

     

    Could there have been: lot's of interference, problems with clear LoS, or impingement in Fresnel Zone?

    We tested this out in the middle of nowhere so there would have been no interference and clear LoS, however for Fresnel zone impingement - I didn't make any calculations for this. The APs were fitted about four metres up on tripods - but I cant believe this would account for speeds of around 30Mbps.

    What RSSI value are you getting on the mesh link from both sides?

    Here is what I am getting on the MST200 that I have in production. Distance of APs is around 330 Meters

     

    Link quality: 82%, Data rate: 130M, RSSI: 48, SNR: 48,
    Input rate: 36.49 Kbps, Output rate: 13.16 Kbps.
