I am gettign into aruba now and have 11 iap-205's setup

every once in a while I get calls about limited connectivity, adn when I look in the controller devices connected to an AP have a 169 ip whic means it did not get to the dhcp to get the address

to fix this condition I simply reboot the ap and everything is good for a bit, this happens about once a week on about 2 of my 11 AP's that I currently have

What type of VLAN is it? Network assigned, Magic VLAN? Are you doing DHCP on the IAP or allowing a dedicated DHCP server to assign IPs? How many clients are connected to the network, and how large is the subnet they are assigned to?

When clients have this issues, is it all clients ,or just a few in one area?

the vlan is network assigned and works 100% if I use a network cable and plug ito the same vlan and get the proper ip's

I have a deditcated dhcp server for this vlan

currently 32 people are connected to the aruba wifi network

the subnet is a /24 and ip's are available

this happens per ap, if I take an affected laptop down the hall it will connect to a different ap and get the proper ip and all is good

    thanx for the help

When it is happened you can try to enabled a pcap on the device and see whats going on:

    # debug pkt type dhcp

    # debug pkt dump

This should dump all DHCP packets to the SSH session. if you want to capture all packets on the radio until the issue happens you can try a pcap to a machine running wireshark

    # pcap start 33:33:33:33:33:33 1.1.1.1 5555 0 5000

Replace 33:33:33:33:33:33 with the MAC of the bss you want to capture. Run # show ap bss-table to find the MAC you want to capture. Replace 1.1.1.1 with the IP of the machine running wireshark.

This might tell you if the packets are being sent into the network, or not even being received by the AP.

Are you running a new version of code? might be worth upgrading/checking release notes for DHCP fixes if you are on an older code version.

so I ran those commands on an AP that this morning just stopped giving out ips

this is the output when the ap is working properly

    dhcp: message-type: request
                 hardware type: 1, len: 6, hops: 0
txn id: 0x35f0168b, seconds elapsed: 0
                 client mac: 58:94:6b:f8:c6:d4
                 magic cookie: 0x63825363
          #dhcp-option: requested-ip: 172.29.102.78
          #dhcp-option: message-type: request
          #dhcp-option: dhcp-server: 172.29.100.101

and here is the output when the AP isn't giving out addresses

    #dhcp: message-type: request
                 hardware type: 1, len: 6, hops: 0
txn id: 0x4ce48aaa, seconds elapsed: 0
                 boot flags: 0x8000
                 client mac: 48:51:b7:23:1d:1a
                 magic cookie: 0x63825363
          #dhcp-option: requested-ip: 172.29.102.148
          #dhcp-option: message-type: request

the only difference is that when the ap stops giving out ip's the DHCP request is missing this line  #dhcp-option: dhcp-server: 172.29.100.101 which is the ip of the dhcp server

if I restart the ap that is having issues it will show a good dhcp request for a while but will eventually go back this state

    thanx

    so I ran those commands

the ap had 3 people on it with valid ip's and a new pc was trying to get onto the same AP

th enew pc was just getting an 169 address as it can't reach the dhcp server

a restart of the ap and the device connects fine

is there still no reason for this issue, seems to be happening to 1 or 2 out of 11 ap's

are these just broken units, they all connect to the same switch and access the same dhcp server

What version of code are on your IAP-205s?

Hi - We have just implemented 12 iaps and this has happened 3 times now in 3 weeks, it's exactly the same issue as described above, is there a solution for this? A reboot of the affected iap restores connection but it's just not good enough for a brand new system.

    iAP205,

Please consider upgrading to 4.1.1.7 or 4.1.1.8.  There are alot of fixes that went in, that might solve your problem.

I have the same issue, where do I find this firmware upgrade?

    http://support.arubanetworks.com/

You need to have a support account, and then under Software you can find the Aruba Instant code.

Try the link provided by cjoseph, it should allow you to download the firmware without having to login.

I am currently running 6.4.2.3-4.1.1.3 on 15 APs. The one available on the link provided by Joseph is 6.4.2.6-4.1.1.13. To be sure, this is compatable with my IAP-205s?

What is the filename of the firmware?
    Did you use the GUI?
Please try from a wired workstation, if you can...

I used Arubainstant_Taurus_6.4.2.6-4.1.1.13_54918 with the GUI from a a non-wired workstation. Will attempt again at 3pm from a wired workstation if you say this is the correct file. Have to wait until school is out, so there are no interuptions. Thanks.

If you can, please compute the Md5 sum to make sure you got the file and it is not corrupted.  Download the Aruba.sha256 file and open it in notepad.  Compare the md5sum for the device downloaded to the md5sum in the file by using an md5sum checker:

None of the APs give out IP addresses at the same time? Are the VLANs virtual controller assigned or network assigned in those SSIDs?

Was this problem ever resolved?  I am having the same issue.  Need help!  I have both IAP 135 's and IAP 205's.  Current firmware shows:  64264116-5009.  I have learned this only occurs with Windows 7 workstations.  Unfortunately, both my labs are still Windows 7.

Yes, please upgrade to latest conservative release 4.2.4.8. or 6.5.3.2.

    Thanks,

Will that work for both the IAP 135 and the IAP 205?  I don't want to comepletely break my wireless network.

    Thanks,

Looks like IAP-135 onl supports up to Instant code 4.2, so this wont work

You can just choose the latest GA or EA code here:  http://support.arubanetworks.com/LifetimeWarrantySoftware/tabid/121/DMXModule/661/Default.aspx?EntryId=21997
