    Hello,

We currently run an eduroam SSID and a temp guest network(portal), but have been asked to look at getting chromecast working on our wireless network. How have other people managed this? We need to be able to trace uses who connect to our network for any issues that occur(we use a Janet uk connection). It needs to be scaleable and managed easily.

Any ideas or help would be most grateful.

    Do you have ClearPass?

Yes, we are using clearpass as our radius server and for the guest access portal at the moment.

The recommendation would be to use the ClearPass Guest Device Repository to allow users to register headless devices like Chromecasts, game consoles, printers, speakers, etc. It’s a complete self-registration portal for your users.

You then configure rules in your guest service to allow these devices to bypass the captive portal on your open network.

    Hi,

This was an option i was thinking about, but we might push our guest network traffic via a different ISP which would mean they would have no access to any home drives  resources without a VPN.

Also the clearpass guest network is being used as a temporary solution and hasnt been signed off as the way forward as yet.

Many organizations uses the role based access controls inside ClearPass to drop the headless devices onto a different network than guest users. This is a very common deployment.

We dont use that here, we use a filter on our users to look for a @xxx.ac.uk and if it matches we place them into an internal user role and the others just in an external role, thats it.

I dont see that changing anytime soon sadly.

There really isn’t any other way to handle headless devices unfortunately.
