    Posted Apr 11, 2014 05:12 AM

    Hello,

We are having some issues with a certain chipset on our eduroam 802.1x network and was wondering if other people are seeing a problem with it too. The chipset in question is the Intel 7260 running windows 8 and 7, the problem we are seeing is devices containing these wont connect or if they do its very hit and miss and the connection will drop within minutes if not seconds.

Looking at the connections of these problem deivces we dont even see it connecting to the AP nor any requests hitting our radius server.

The only solution we have found is to use a USB wireless dongle which works fine on these devices with that chipset so we know its not a problem with the OS as we have loads of windows 8 users not having these problems.

Any help or other people having the same issues would be most helpful. On intels website hidden away i found this

    http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-034535.htm

We are running 6.1.3.6 with about 1650 APs mainly AP105s and AP135s with a single SSID of eduroam.

Generally speaking, when you don't see an auth request on your RADIUS server, a driver update is needed.

Many of the issues we saw with this chipset on Windows 8 were fixed in 8.1.

What version of the Intel driver are you using? See the post below for additional info:

We have tried all the releases of drivers for this chipset. Due to be very newly released by intel we are still stuck. We have seen this probelm with other intel chipsets and rolling back older drivers have solved this issue with window 8 and 8.1 but no joy with this one.

For kicks, can you try disabling VHT on the client? (change to HT Mode)

    Hi,

Thanks for the tip. We have tried his and many others that are on the Intel forum page about 3 of us from different teams have spent a good solid week trying all types or tips and work arounds on this problem. The only thing we have found to resolve it was the USB wireless dongle.

We have requested that our suppliers dont supply us devices with this chipset but this doesnt help our students that have them in theirs.

Just trying to get a feel for who else is having this trouble.

We have tons of machines with this chipset and we haven't any issues. We're running 6.3.x code though.

    Hi,

Do we have dot11k enabled here?

Does anyone know if there is a bug on version 6.1.3.5 if these chipsets work on 6.3.x?

Cappall, are your users connection with these chipset to eduroam or your open SSID?

    Hi,

This appears to be Intel specific bug. This chipset is not compatible with dot11k, from controller standpoint disabling dot11k should resolve the issue.

We should see the problem in the latest codes of AOS as well.

I have dot11k diabled by default and my 7260 AC chip is still messing up.  I have noticed that my laptop will sometimes roam slow, and will almost never reconnect from sleep mode unless I ask it to re-associate to my secure SSID.

We have gone back to HP who supply our laptops and when we said about the chipset issue they said they will replace the 7260AC with other brand. This sadly doesn't help our students who have these as only using a USB dongle will allow them to connect to our network.

You could always replace the half mini PCI's with Intel Centrino 6250's. They are very stable. What version of driver is running the 7260's?

Are you using drivers from HP or direct from Intel?

  • 16.  RE: Intel 7260 chipset issue

    Posted Apr 25, 2014 08:23 AM

We have tried a wide of drivers from intel and windows using current and past ones, no joy.

Intel on their page have suggest a few methods to try and resolve issues like disabling N etc its also not very stable when we have tried this on home WPA networks which include slow and poor performance.

Are you using 802.1X? What is the authentication type? What encryption type? We have 802.1X/PEAP/MSchapV2 and it works well.

We are using 802.1X PEAP and MS CHAPV2 running 6.1.3.5

We have even tried using a RAP3 as an IAP off site and creating a new 802.1X network and still these chipsets didnt work.

The7260 was not out when 6.1.3.5 came out in 2012 and most likely has not been tested against it.  I would upgrade to the latest 6.1.3.x before you do anything.

EDIT:  On second thought, you should make plans to upgrade to 6.3.1.6, which has fixes for a number of Windows 8 clients, and chromebooks.  Please engage your Aruba SE to get to the bottom of this before making any hasty decisions.

Good information.  I didn't know that the 7260 was released post AOS 6.1.3.5.  Thanks!

Sorry the problem we are seeing is devices containing the Intel 7260 chipsets will not connect to our wireless network. We see no requests going to our APs (105 &135s).  The device will try to connect then fails, then when re-connection the device wont see any SSIDs our, neighbouring one nothing, dead. a reboot will then allow it to see the SSID but once trying to connect it just times out again.

We have carried out wireshark tests and the device just ARPs

What type of controllers are you using? As Joseph stated above I would seriously look into upgrading your code. But coordinate with your Se and TAC before doing so. Also confirm your windows 8 clients have the current drivers from intel.

Mbonadie, the Intel 7260 is an 802.11ac wireless card, right?  80211ac was ratified in 2013 http://grouper.ieee.org/groups/802/11/Reports/802.11_Timelines.htm#tgac

Yes it is 802.11ac. There are some different iterations. They have a desktop version and I think a 1x1. I have the dual band 2x2 MIMO half-mini PCI chip in my Dell on Win7. Maybe the bugs are more prevalent on Win8 machines?

HINT to troubleshooting clients in Windows event viewer: Look at the "WLAN-Autoconfig" service for wireless-related logs. Lots of good information. Here is one such log from my machine:

Go to: Event Viewer/Applications and Services Logs/Microsoft/Windows/WLAN-AutoConfig/Operational

    You may see this:

    Wireless network association succeeded.

    Network Adapter: Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260
    Interface GUID: {a9c7552d-195f-4e0d-9581-1d409128cf4f}
    Local MAC Address: AC:7B:A1:02:BD:7C
    Network SSID: IU Secure
    BSS Type: Infrastructure
    Peer MAC Address: 18:64:72:FD:72:10

    And then this:

WLAN AutoConfig service has successfully connected to a wireless network.

    Network Adapter: Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260
    Interface GUID: {a9c7552d-195f-4e0d-9581-1d409128cf4f}
Connection Mode: Automatic connection with a profile
    Profile Name: IU Secure
    SSID: IU Secure
    BSS Type: Infrastructure
    BSSID: 18:64:72:FD:72:10
    PHY Type: 802.11n
    Authentication: WPA2-Enterprise
    Encryption: AES
    802.1x Enabled: Yes

This was a successful "association". I would look for errors and see what they tell you. They might lead you in a helpful direction.

Could you be more specific when you state: "still these chipsets didnt work." What wireless symptoms are you noticing?

When i mean "still these chipsets" i mean the intel 7260's

We have no problems with any other make/brand of wireless chipsets just this one.

    Intel have released this statement.

    http://www.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-034535.htm

Myself and two other colleagues have spent about 3 weeks looking into this problem and searching forum pages and there seems to be alot of using having issues with the 7260 chipset.

So we have experianced issues with windows 8 clientsnot being able to asscioate or connect when they go to sleep with the N-6300 series cards. Upgrading the driver resolved the issue we were seeing. I would involve Aruba TAC and if your able possibly think about upgrading your controllers to newer code.

Right. I read those forums too. But, you still haven't explained to us the problem. Don't take this the wrong way, but you won't get anything out of the forums unless you explain to us the problem. We really do want to help. I use the same chipset and updated the driver and now it works better a few weeks ago.

We have many "It just doesn't work" come to us that are magically fixed driver updates/other easy issues.
