New versions of AirWave Wireless Management Suite are released 3-4 times per year with a major release approximately every 12-18 months. After the initial release of a new version, there are often maintenance releases that follow for the next few weeks or as the need arises to resolve issues reported by customers.
The version number for AWMS usually has 3 components (for example, 6.4.1) that correspond to the Major Version (6), Minor Version (4), and Maintenance Release Version (1).
Upgrades to a particular minor version can be done from the two releases prior. For example, if you are running AWMS 6.0, you can upgrade directly to 6.2, but we recommend that you upgrade to 6.2 before upgrading to 6.3 or 6.4.
Upgrades may occasionally require that the operating system be upgraded. Advance notice of at least one release is usually given.
Maintenance releases typically only include bug fixes, but they occasionally contain new functionality. All changes in a maintenance release are documented in the release notes.
Critical security vulnerabilities that are discovered in AirWave software are handled according to Aruba’s published guidelines. Fixes for such issues may be released for older versions of AWMS depending on the severity of the issue, but fixes for minor issues will only be released for the most recent minor version of AWMS.
Aruba Customer Advocacy will assist customers in running and troubleshooting any version of AWMS released in the last 18 months, but patches and enhancements to AWMS will only be made to the most recent minor version of AWMS (except in the case of critical security vulnerabilities).
The recommendations in the “Choosing the right server hardware” guide are expected to be valid for approximately 3 years. That is, hardware that is recommended for supporting 1000 devices should be able to handle 1000 devices across software upgrades for the next 3 years, assuming use of the same features. New features that require additional hardware resources may not be available without a hardware upgrade.
