Network Scans to Discover Switches

Aruba Employee

When AirWave scans a network looking for switches, it needs to find Vlan1 in one of the first 8 available interfaces. This article describes how to troubleshoot switch scanning issues using command line snmpwalks.

If we scan a switch with this interface configuration:

# s2w switch7.arubanetworks.com public ifDescr
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.1 = STRING: "Vlan1"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.50 = STRING: "Vlan50"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.51 = STRING: "Vlan51"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.52 = STRING: "Vlan52"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.59 = STRING: "Vlan59"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.10001 = STRING: "FastEthernet0/1"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.10002 = STRING: "FastEthernet0/2"

the scan can (and should, if it's a supported model) add it into the AMP. However, a switch whose interface configuration is this:

# s2w switch7.arubanetworks.com public ifDescr
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.49 = STRING: "Vlan1"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.50 = STRING: "Vlan50"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.51 = STRING: "Vlan51"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.52 = STRING: "Vlan52"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.59 = STRING: "Vlan59"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.10001 = STRING: "FastEthernet0/1"
RFC1213-MIB::ifDescr.10002 = STRING: "FastEthernet0/2"

we will not add it, since Vlan1 is not in ifDescr 1-8.

If you have switches that can't be discovered because of this, we'd be interested to know. For now (in AirWave 7.0) your best bet would be to add the devices via csv file on the Device Setup -> Add page.
