Network Management

Hello this time for the contest i decided to do something that could be really useful when an administrator forget the root password of the airwave, and then he cannot get into the console.  We dont use the console to much and you might ran in the trouble that you forgot it!

Anyways its really easy so lets get started!

1. The first thing you need to do is reboot the Airwave, but in this case as you cannot reboot it because you got no access to the console, you will have to turn it off and then turn it on
2. You will see press any key like this:
3. So you press any key! at that momment, and you will see after that something like this:
4. Here you press "e" to edit the command before booting, and then you willl see something like this
5. you select the one that says vmlinuz, like you see in the screenshot!, after that you will see something like this:
6. You need to add the word single like you see in there!, you will see that the line will end on nodma, and you need to add a space a the word single
7. Press enter, and then press b...  After pressing b you will see it will reboot like this
8. After you get the prompt you type passwd like you see in the image
9. After this just type reboot, to reboot the server, and it will reload normally.

when I type "e" the Airwave not go in edit mode. 

What version of AMP?  If you're on a version newer than 8.2.4.1 (hopefully 8.2.6.1), then you need to follow the 'amprecovery' method described in the user guide.

with amprecovery method I can reset the "ampadmin" user but not root user. I needed to go into the console as root to correct network parameters. But I have solved with VM restore.

ampadmin user has ability to run network setup from the AMPCLI menu.  AMPCLI -> 8 Advanced -> 3 Config Network Settings.  In 8.2.6.1, the network settings allows you to config multiple eth interfaces.

i couldnt hit "e" what should i do?

Which version of Airwave are you on? Is it 8.2.4?

yes, it is 8.2.4.1 and i forgot the root password, what should i do?

with Airwave version 8.2.4.1, there is no root access anymore. You cannot login using the root user. you have to use the "ampadmin" user with the password you created during the upgrade to this version or during installation. 

If you forgot the password for the "ampadmin" as well, here is how to reset this password:

When I try to reset my Password for ampadmin the system give me this result:

Changing password for user ampadmin

Changing password for ampadmin

(current) UNIX password: _

I have no root password to change the password from ampadmin.

What should i do here?

Please open a support case.  Do you remember setting an admin account during the upgrade?  Or during the fresh install?  If you don't recall, then you might have to boot off of a rescue CD to fix (in which case support can add extra guidance).

This look slike what we need - except I can't get my head around the fact that our AMP is a virtual unit so not sure how we'd see the boot process.

Any thoughts?

Even on VM once you connect to the ESX you should be able to see the boot process. However, this option to enter single user mode wont work from 8.2.4 and above as the root user is disabled.

Thanks Vishnu - unfortunately we don't manage nor have access to the virtual platform so I will need to try and get clear instructions to the relevant team.

Also, as i mentioned above if we are on 8.2.4 version and above these steps wont be helpful as the root user will be disabled.

As we aren't on version then that I didn't respond to that aspect as being irrelevant tous / my query.
