Apple TVs, AirGroup and connections with iPads

    Good Morning,

We have about 60 Apple TVs in our environment. We have recently been finding that we are having issues with Apple TVs not showing up in the list of available Apple TVs.  We are running an Aruba 3600 controller with about 90 access points running around the network.  We do not have clear pass, but are running AirGroup as we have two VLANs that have two different IP schemes because we need to filter differently with another appliance.  This issue has just recently started showing up.  We thought that it might be an issue where as we had to much traffic on the wireless at once so we started and took some of the Apple TVs off the wireless and put them on the wire.  These show up in the list but sometimes a few of them don't.  We do use a 3rd party software as we are a WIndows environment to Airplay our desktops.  We have found that our desktops will sometimes show only the hardwired Apple TVs.  We have to disable the network port and re-enable it, and then we get the entire list.

I have also been noticing that many of the Apple TVs will have a number in parenthesis next to it.  These numbers are now starting to grow.  Any help with any of this if it at all makes and sense would be great.

    Thanks

    Patrick

    Patrick,

Please try having the Apple TVs in a separate vlan without macs, and see if that helps.

We are not using any Macs that we are using for desktops.  We are a Windows Envioronement.  This is an issue for the VLAN our teachers are on and the VLAN that our students are on.

    PNkelly,

    A couple things to check:

    - Make sure the Timezone on the AppleTV is correct.  Somehow we saw an AppleTV that was not in the same Timezone as the controller had issues maintaining a connection to the AppleTV.

    - Make sure ONLY the wired is configured.  We saw that if you configure wireless AND wired, it will still attempt to connect the wireless and increment the name like this AppleTV-1, AppleTV-2.  We saw this in the packet captures.

    - Last but not least make sure the AppleTV is not in the same subnet with MACs regardless of what they are being used for. -- We will circle back with you on this one shortly...

    Patrick,

If your macs are simply in the same VLAN as the Apple TVs regardless of their use case, they can cause that issue. If that is not the case, please open a case with support, as they can tune your network to prevent what is happening.
