Hello, if I were you I will double check flash file (uploaded from the Switch to a particular location or uploaded to the Switch from a particular location, no matter the "transfer method" used) against its MD5, SHA1 or SHA256 hash values when those are available (published). That way you will be sure that what you have uploaded from (or uploaded to) the Switch matches - on the destination location or on the origin location - the file you're supposing to work with (published).
ASP -> download SWI file (example
from here for KB.16.10.0013) -> check calculated MD5/SHA256 against published MD5/SHA256 hash values -> if calculated hash of downloaded file matches with hash of published files then your downloaded file is AS the published one -> you can use that file and upload it to your Switch to perform an ArubaOS-Switch system software update.
The same if you want to backup the ArubaOS-Switch operating system image(s) on your device to your PC, once you uploaded the wanted image on your PC, you should verify that uploaded image has the same Hash value of the one published by Aruba on ASP (clearly the considering the very same version)...because we're supposing that that particular image flashed into the Switch was/is/will be exactly equal to the related image you can download from ASP.
Clearly corruptions can happen during file transfers, on both directions, both for file transfers that is going to happen locally or remotely...but the reason for those corruptions can be reduced to involved tools' incorrect configuration or involved connectivity issues...that's because, doing the check suggested above, you already verified (and eventually excluded) your file(s) against corruptions at the origin/destination as the result of initial file(s) transfer.

I didn't initially read the release note but I have now, thank you.
I asked that question because;
I backed up the OS to a USB and restored it to the switch from a tftp server (backed up OS does not have the .swi extension as can be seen when downloading from the website). However, when I attempted a boot of the same OS after restoring it, I saw an error message the said something like "it does not contain a signature". But when I install a new version I downloaded from the website, it works, so I thought either downgrading or the absence of the file name extension was the issue.
And also because we are new to Aruba switch and would like to learn about it as much as possible by first carrying exercises.

Did you read the KB.16.10.0012 Release Notes? didn't you? IIRC there is a note about "downgrading" ArubaOS-Switch operating system version (in terms of recommendations, restrictions and best practices). I personally am not able to see a valid reason to "downgrade" a Switch software once it was successfully upgraded and once it's verified that it is running flawlessly (as I believe it's your case). Is it just an exercise?

Hi Obi, IMHO in approaching the ArubaOS-Switch operating system you're extrapolating a little bit too much from your Cisco IOS operating system's experience/knowledge. HPE Aruba isn't properly Cisco (and vice-versa). What is architecturally valid for Cisco Catalyst wouldn't be valid too for some or all Aruba switch series.
Specifically speaking there isn't any vlan.dat file. There isn't any (exposed to user) VLAN Database apart what you define and see on the Switch's running configuration...all you need is a good - properly working - running configuration. To backup (and, consequently, to recover) a Switch's running configuration you need (1) a properly working Switch and (2) a backup of its running configuration (supposing the running configuration was saved as it happens when you execute the write memory CLI command).
That's what is essentially required in normal operating scenarios.

I opted for the USB option for the OS and configuration files backup and it worked.
However, I was unable to restore from the same USB but I could restore from the
tftp server so I guess I am good.
Just one more thing though, I could not find anything regarding the vlan.dat file
in the switch and on any documents I have seen.
I know that cisco catalyst makes use of a vlan.dat file, so I was thinking it would be
the same for Aruba switches. I am wrong?
If so, what is the files the houses the vlan database called and where can I find it in
Aruba 3810M?

If you see retransmit exceeded, as packet loss on a LAN connection is quite rare I would not expect increasing the retry count to solve anything.
I personally started to abandon/replace tftp years ago as there were many issues and limitations (The original tftp has a size limitation of 32MB, and not all tftp servers can transfer files of a significant size). Did you capture the traffic on the tftp server? It can be that there are error messages in the tftp protocol, or the data frames sent are too large and fragmented/dropped.
In this case, I think sftp (ssh-based) is the only alternative. For firmware uploads to the switch, I find the web UI is also much more reliable.

No I have not tried uploading files from one TFTP client to another.
Since the error message says "033M Error in sending file. Exceeded max number of retransmits.",
I was hoping that there would be a way to extend the number of retransmits.
It may sound naïve but is there a way to do something like that?
