What is MIBs ? How to Load Aruba MIB in Mac & Linux distro

Jul 03, 2014 11:08 PM

This article explains:
a.  What is MIB?
b.  Where to download the most recent ArubaMIB files ?
c.   How to Load them in a Linux, Mac & Windows environment

Environment : This article applies to all Aruba OS and Aruba Instant OS versions.

What is the MIB?
The MIB, or Management Information Base, is an ASCII text file that describes SNMP network elements as a list of data objects.
Think of it as a dictionary of The SNMP language - every object referred to in an SNMP message must be listed in the MIB.

Downloading MIB Files:
The most recent ArubaMIB files are available for registered customers at
https://support.arubanetworks.com

Here’s how to load it in a Linux & Mac
Copy your .mib file into the /usr/share/snmp/mibs/ directory (the standard place on Mac & debian/Redhat for SNMP MIBs).

The most widely used agent/daemon for snmp is Net-SNMP which when installed and configured will load the MIBs from the directory mentioned above

In order to use the snmpwalk command on a PC, you may need to search for and install an application.

A Mac works natively.

There are packages available for Linux. For Centos or Redhat, Net-SNMP is a command-line application that tests SNMP functionality. In order to install Net-SNMP on Centos or Redhat, use this command:

yum install net-snmp-utils

Note: If you plan to load the MIBs in order to perform translations locally, create an snmp.conf file and include the desired MIBs

If you’re on Windows, you have a choice of several freeware applications that will happily take your MIB file and scan a device for you.
