How to disable spanning tree on Aruba Mobility Switches?

Aruba Employee

Introduction : Aruba mobility switches support two flavors of STP:

1. PVST
2. MST

Sometimes, we do not want the STP for reasons like:

1. There is only one uplinlk, thus there is no chance of loops.
2. Testing purposes.

Environment : This Article applies to All Aruba mobility switches and code versions.

Configuration Steps : To check the current STP, execute the command "show spanning tree"

1. When it is PVST, the output is similar to below:

(ArubaS2500-24P) (config) #show spanning-tree
VLAN 1
Root ID            Address: 001a.1e09.1940,  Priority: 32768
Bridge ID          Address: 001a.1e09.1940,  Priority: 32768
Hello Time: 2 sec, Max Age: 20 sec, Forward Delay: 15 sec
We are the root of the spanning tree
root path cost 0

2. When it is MSTP, output looks like:

(ArubaS2500-24P) (config) #show spanning-tree
MST 0
Root ID            Address: 001a.1e09.1940,  Priority: 32768
Regional Root ID   Address: 001a.1e09.1940,  Priority: 32768
Bridge ID          Address: 001a.1e09.1940,  Priority: 32768
External root path cost 0, Internal root path cost 0

3. To change the STP mode:

(ArubaS2500-24P) (config) #spanning-tree
(ArubaS2500-24P) (spanning-tree) #mode ?
mstp                    Multiple spanning tree mode
pvst                    Per-Vlan rapid spanning tree mode

4. To disable the STP:

(ArubaS2500-24P) (config) #spanning-tree
(ArubaS2500-24P) (spanning-tree) #no mode
(ArubaS2500-24P) (spanning-tree) #exit
(ArubaS2500-24P) (config) #show spanning-tree
No spanning tree instance exists.
