620-US Support and Updating.

So I now have a 620-US that was supposed to come with AP licenses, but didnt, and is also missing its PoE license.

It is running ArubaOS 3.4.0.4, build 22127, but during the boot process it says "<<<<< Welcome to Aruba Networks - Aruba A620-US-4 >>>>>" does this mean that it was supposed to have a 4 license AP but the previous user deleted it? And the PoE with it? The sticker on the controller just says "620-US". I am working to see if I can get the eBay seller to get me the licenses, otherwise this is getting returned.

Assuming I can get the licensing from the seller....Will 2x AP93 and 2xAP125 work with a 3.4 OS? What if the AP is running a firmware higher than the controller?

Aruba says I need a $205 support contract before they will even talk to me. Seems overkill for someone who is just setting up a small test network at home.

TL;DR ; I work in IT for a SMB, we use all CISCO, my company just got bought by another company that uses Aruba for their wireless stuff, figured I would get familar with the new stuff and got a cheap controller/APs on eBay. None of it works because of licensing.

If the controller has the -4 model number, then yes, it would have come with 4 AP licenses.  If the owner performed a "write erase all", then that would have wiped the licensing from the box.    The licenses can be retrieved/imported through the licensing portal (https://licensing.arubanetworks.com), but if the previous owner had this controller in their licensing account, you may have to work with support to get it transferred (here lies your dillemma).

I would contact the seller and ask them about the licenses; both the POE and AP license.

    AP-93 requires ArubaOS 5.0.4.2, 6.0.2.1 or 6.1.2.0

    AP-125 requires ArubaOS 3.3.1.9

Also, it would have come with 4 AP licenses, however it would not have had PEFNG or RFP licenses.

Already tried contacting the licensing people, they wont talk to me since the SN of the controller is out of a contract. I am hesitant to pay the $205 for the service contract only for them to tell me that the licenses are gone, locked, or stuck in someone elses account.

Thanks for the version info for the APs. Is there a table or chart somewhere for AP/OS/Controller compatability? A google search for "Will an AP93 work with a A610-US" doesnt give many useful hits.

For current APs:  http://www.arubanetworks.com/pdf/products/MAT_AP.pdf.   Scroll down to the Minimum Software Version section.

For end of sale APs (including the 93 and 125) you'll have to search for each APs datasheet (the end of the datasheet has the supported versions).

Contact the seller and ask about the licenses.   Without a support contract, this may be your only option.  If you opt to pay for the contract, you should not have a problem with getting the licenses (assuming it was indeed a 620-US-4).

Inbuilt AP lic should not disappear with write erase all, they should be there (check the output of "show license-usage ap" rather than 'show license').

As for the POE license, email me your serial number and I will recover it for you - we cannot give you the latest software without a support contract, but there are reasons that require the POE to be tied to a license key which shouldn't be a cost borne by yourself (IMHO). Interesting. The licenseing appears correct.

    Hi Jeff,

I have a similar problem that I dont have AP licenses on a 620 I bought off eBay.

Do you know how much it would cost to get license for it? Its only for my home lab so I dont want to spend too much if I dont have to.
