Airplay now available for iOS8 Devices

Prior to the release of iOS 8.0.2 users on an SSID with Airplay disabled via Airgroup could not connect to AppleTVs. Now, since the update, users can view Airplay devices and connect to Airplay devices even though Airplay is disabled.

Devices that are still at iOS 8.0 or older do not have Airplay capabilities.

Has anyone else experienced this? The iPads are not finding the AppleTVs via Bluetooth as I have tested the discovery on devices that have Bluetooth disabled and we're still able to find the Airplay devices via WiFi.

Our controller is a 3600 and AOS v6.3.1.2

    Thanks in advance

Our company has tested this as well. We have either placed a pass code on the Apple TV or removed them in favor of a less vulnerable device.

    Apple info http://help.apple.com/deployment/ios/#/apd8fc751f59

Long story short:  You could have devices transmitting on149 and or channel 6 in your infrastructure.  The other downside is that the device you are using to "airplay" disconnects itself from the wireless network and has no connectivity while you are airplaying.

    cjoseph,

According to that document, Apple recommends disabling channels 149 and 153 for AirPlay to work optimally. How does one do this on the controller? We're running Aruba OS 6.3.1.9.

    Thanks!

You should consider NOT removing wireless channels to accomodate a device. You may cause additional RF contention issues in your environment.

    derbystar,

In my own non-Aruba opinion, I am not sure a company has the right to ask you to disable parts of your infrastructure to accomodate their device, they should work in your system, instead of the other way around.

    (personal opinion here as well)

You may want to consider competing products (that end in "cast") that don't require you to change your infrastructure and work across all platforms.

The fruit can't continue to "force" people to change their infrastucture to accomodate home devices because they refuse to adapt to the enterprise.

If you disable those channels, you are only left with 6 non-DFS 5 GHz channels which can severely impact you in the future.

Thanks for the suggestion but the Apple TV is a superior device compared to a Chromecast with very limited functionality. All of our teachers and students have Apple MacBooks and/or iPads. They work extremely well over our Aruba wi-fi network, even across several VLANs however, I'm always looking for ways to increase stability and speed.

Disabling wireless channels is not a solution.

    derbystar16,

You do not need to disable the channels for Airplay to continue to work.

I am looking to speak to someone in a k12 environment who has some solid experience with setting up Apple TVs for staff and students using iPads.

    Thanks
