How many VRRP Instances Needed

I have a pair of 7210's in a master/standby setup. I currently have 3 VRRP instances in place.

VRRP Instance 48 - Serves as LMS for AP's

VRRP Instance 49 - Server as LMS for AP's

VRRP Instance 50 - Used for Master Redundancy

I know I can consolidate 48 and 49. This is a holdover from the migration from 3600's to the 7210's. However, my question is do I need a dedicated VRRP for master/redundancy, or can I use instance 49 for both LMS and controller redundancy? Thanks.

You only need a single instance.

Ok. I thought so, but wanted to confirm. How difficult is it to change the VRRP instance that the master/standby uses? Can I just change the Master VRRP Instance ID, or is there more to it?

It could be tricky, because the master is determined by who has control of what vrrp.  If you switch the master redundancy to another vrrp, you might have "split brain".

Understood. So the best way is to remove master redundancy and then rebuild I assume.

    From the standby :

     master-redundancy

    (config-master-redundancy)#no master-vrrp

    (config-master-redundancy)#no peer-ip-address

Then, repeat above on master. Once redundancy is removed, rebuild with new VRRP ID.

Backup the flash on your master, FIRST...
