How to prevent clients from frequently jumping VLANs

  • 1.  How to prevent clients from frequently jumping VLANs

    When our wireless infrastructure was put in place, a bunch of small vlans ( 3 /24 ranges for IP addresses per vlan) were created to reduce the broadcast issues at the time. 

     

    Problem we see today is that a client may be placed on a vlan, but after reconnect, it would be switched to a new one. Is there anything that could be done to prevent this from happening too quickly?

     

     

    Something like 'sticky vlan'?  If not, I guess we could increase the range of ip addresses in a particular vlan, and then reduce the number of them?

    What mechanism is being used to assign VLANs for your devices?

    We use external DHCP.  This is for students, so they get lumped into the same group regardless of location. 

     

    Single VLAN is the way to go, but not ready to redo the whole thing.

    What is wrong with getting a different VLAN when a student reconnects?

    Internal addresses are matched to an external address via NAT. It seems that the frequency of them jumping vlans gets them a different internal address and hence a new NAT translation is created. But the original stays put for a while. Also, easier to track down.
