MCS Codes

Looking at the AP270 data sheet trying to get an idea of what type of bandwidth I can expect with "ideal conditions"   I reviewed some MCS sites like this one: http://mcsindex.com/ but I still do not get it.  How do I use the table to convert MCS0/8 23.0 -85.0 into Mb's?

802.11n HT20 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

MCS0/8 23.0 -88.0

MCS7/15 17.0 -71.0

802.11n HT40 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz

MCS0/8 23.0 -85.0

MCS7/15 17.0 -68.0

802.11ac VHT20 5 GHz

MCS0 23.0 -88.0

MCS9 16.0 -65.0

802.11ac VHT40 5 GHz

MCS0 23.0 -85.0

MCS9 16.0 -62.0

802.11ac VHT80 5 GHz

MCS0 23.0 -82.0

MCS9 16.0 -59.0

Re: MCS Codes

Thanks Colin but I am still confussed.  If the MCS says MCS7/15 would this be MCS code 7?  What is the 15?

Also if it is MCS code  7 and I am using 2.4 radio 20MHz channel does the chart below mean I get 19Mbs between them?

MCS  Streams  20 MHz  40 MHz  40 MHz SGI
---  -------  ------  ------  ----------
  0   1          6.5    13.5    15.0
  1   1         13.0    27.0    30.0
  2   1         19.5    40.5    45.0
  3   1         26.0    54.0    60.0
  4   1         39.0    81.0    90.0
  5   1         52.0   108.0   120.0
  6   1         58.5   121.5   135.0
  7   1         65.0   135.0   150.0

Re: MCS Codes

The association rate is a function of AP and client support.  The spatial streams column is dependent on client support.  What is the client in this case?

Re: MCS Codes

Colin,  I am not so much worried about a client connection as I am a MESH or Point to Point connection.  Looking to see what the speeds would be between the Mesh point and the Mesh portals.  So I can document in my standards what speeds to expect if you select equipement xyz...

Re: MCS Codes

That will be wholly dependent on the AP power output, channel availability, and MOST importantly the Antenna you select (and then if you have non-standard length cables over 1m, etc then all the loss has to be factored in as well). Additionally, is this a PtP, PtMP, etc?

To be clear, there is no FIRM number. Below is a graph showing the 274 with the ANT-3x3-5712 out to 3km. You might find more success in using the Aruba 3D Outdoor Planner.

If you give us the range you are looking for, that may help, but 11ac and theoreticals pretty much go out the door once you are outdoors and we then rely on tested data to provide best practice numbers.
