Master discovery - multiple domain suffixes

We've been doing discovery via dns for several years with APs at 60 sites (single master, 20 locals). To better accommodate dynamic dns, we've started adding a local domain, i.e. schoolx.district.edu as the first option and district.edu as the second. The master controller is at aruba-master.district.edu.

On reboot, the AP's initial dns query for aruba-master.schoolx.district.edu properly returns no such name. The second dns query does not append the domain suffix. So the request is just for aruba-master with no suffix and results in a server failure response. We've got it working by adding a reference to aruba-master in the local zone of the school that was affected this morning.

Before we go adding references to each zone, is there a work-around or fix coming so that the AP will handle multiple domain suffixxes?

    affects both AP-61 and AP-105

    AOS 6.1.2.7

Planning to upgrade to 6.1.3.1 next weekend. Sooner if it will fix this issue.

    Thanks!

Where are you adding these "options"?  Here is how it works:

A new AP gets its DHCP suffix from the DHCP server and that is the only (single) domain it uses when it puts "aruba-master" in front of the received domain.  Where are the other options being added?

DHCP option 119, DNS Domain Search List. Workstations handle it okay but, as you said, the AP only uses the first domain. We'll add a resolution for aruba-master to each school suffix. I was just wondering if anyone else had ran into this.

Not sure how this would affect your PCs etc, but strikes me you've got two options (as the APs only hunt for the full DNS using the first suffix given).

    1. Reverse the DNS suffixes you're giving out.

    2. Add a DNS resolution for the master within each schools suffix.

Second option might give you better flex in future too of course (in terms of scaling)?

We implemented the second option for the location that had a power out over the weekend and came back up without wireless. We'll roll it out to the other locations today. The first option isn't an option as it adversely affects some other systems. Our workstation guys decided that they needed dynamic dns to support some processes and we have discovered some user workstations with the same names as some of our web servers <:-| The helpdesk guys were banging their heads for a couple of days.
