Mixing AC and N AP's

    Hi:

We have a dorm room that has an AP-115 in (roughly) every third room. This has been working OK, but there are some coverage issues, as the construction uses wire mesh in the walls.

We want to fill in the coverage gaps by putting APs in the remaining rooms.

We are thinking of AP-205's for the other rooms. Will this cause any problems? We're using all 20Mhz channels in the dorms, so channel bonding won't be an issue.

Will devices go bonkers as they walk down the hall and alternate between seeing n and ac APs?

    Any other issues you've seen?

    Thanks,

    Tony

If you are mixing them in the same area, I would recommend disabling VHT in
those areas until you completely convert the area.

    Tim advice is the best

For more info read this article

    community.arubanetworks.com/t5/Technology-Blog/Removing-the-Bottleneck-in-Wireless/ba-p/77978

    Really good info in there.

There is a point which talk about this which i paste it to you here

    - Keep access points of different phy types (a/n/ac) access points separate from each other if possible- Access points within earshot of each other that have different phy types will can provide uneven roaming.  At maximum your clients will favor 802.11n/ac access points, even though a non-802.11n/ac access point is closer and could possibly cause performance issues.  It also will make your RF less predictable.  Try to keep your deployment areas uniform to avoid such issues.

    Cheers

    That's a great post.

    Thanks!

It says: "At maximum your clients will favor 802.11n/ac access points, even though a non-802.11n/ac access point is closer"

That refers to n/ac and non-n/ac.

Does it address mixing n and ac access points in the same rollout?

I guess what I could do is move all of the 115's to one floor or section of the dorm, and use 205's on the other floors.

You can mix the AP locations, but just disable VHT.

    Thanks,
    Tim

    Hi Tim:

Does disabling VHT essentiall turn off AC?

That will turn off the ac practically

It will be like a 802.11n ap.  Which is the reason of why you would be able to mix them if you disable VHT

    Cheers

    Thanks for the answer.

Yes, I now see that the CLI guide defines the VHT option as:

"Enable or disable support for Very High Throughput (802.11ac) on the radio."

    Thank you.
