PoE-powered media converter?

    My team is considering deploying AP-175s in a large outdoor area. Based on our requirements, we're running fiber and power to each AP from the Telecom location. We're likely going with the AP-175 AC PSE option. In this instantiation, we would utilize the AP-175's secondary 802.3af powered Ethernet to power a fiber-copper media converter and in-turn supply copper data to the AP-175.

    Can anyone recommend an elegant solution for the media converter option... perhaps a media converter that accepts RJ45 PoE power or an RJ45 to DC power converter?

    If you have fiber coming in and PoE power going out to the AP, how would this work?

    The AC-powered AP-175 PSE (to my understanding) provides a secodnary PoE port which we would utilize solely for DC power. Correct?

    Did you end up finding a PoE powered media converter? PoE + 1G Copper in / SFP out.

    We have used a number of long runs of a hybrid fiber and power cable terminated to the SP3B board made by Altronix to convert the DC power and Fiber data onto a CAT 6 cable. This was a very successful method for us to place access points far away from the access switch.

    I attached a brochure from Alronix with a number of their solutions.

    There are a number of other companies that have came up with similar products which you might find by searching the internet for "hybrid fiber", or "ethernet over fiber".

    I have some Omni Systems converters deployed for long fiber runs that converts the fiber to copper and provides PoE to an AP-275.

    Thank you, Looks like Omnitron has a PoE powered fibre converter that we are looking for. Which is the reverse of typically availabe media converters that connect fiber, provide PoE power to connected device and require external power

    Resurrecting an old thread, but this may be of interest to you. Aruba now has a fiber media converter that you can piggyback onto a hospitality AP, or use standalone.

    When attaching an AP-505H (either mounted directly on top of the converter or separate from it), keep in mind that the AP-505H will "see" the media converter as a class 5 POE source, even if it does not have enough power for that. For example, when using a class 4 (30W) POE source to power the media converter, the AP-505H may attempt to draw excessive power.
