Hello, we have changed the USB modem connected on RAP3.

Before we used K4505 and it worked without problems, now we use K4605 and we don’t have the device string and device ID for this modem.

    Someone can help me?

    Thanks and Best Regards

    Hi Gian

Can you post the params you were using for the K4505? Huawei devices tend to all be using quite similar modeswitch etc., so let's start with the config that was working before.

Looking online there are a couple of versions of K4506, so we do need to determine the "product ID" that yours is using. Please take the USB modem and put it in a windows pc, connect it to the internet using the USB modem then visit device manager -> ports (COM and LPT). You should see the Huawei (or perhaps named as Vodafone) modem listed under this section, right click on it and choose "properties" - a small box will open which has a tab called "details" - click this. Finally, in the dropdown box that now appears choose "hardware IDs" and copy out the string you see, it will look something like this:  USB\VID_12D1&PID_1003&REV_0000&MI_01

For K4505 USB modem I used the following params without problems:

    USB Device Identifier: 0x12d11464

    USB Dial String: ATDT*99***1#

In attachment you can fnd the screnshoot required.

    HI Gian,

for a first attempt, please set device ID to 0x12d114c6 and leave everything else the same. If that fails, we can try modeswitching it - but let's try easiest way first.

    regards

ok, then let's try to modeswitch it. Please add the following, leaving the device id as in my last post and configure this in the USB modeswitch field, including the double quotes.

    "-v 0x12d1 -p 0x14c1 -M 55534243123456780000000000000011062000000100000000000000000000"

    Thanks for your quichky reply!

I have added the USB modeswitch as you suggest, but the Controller requires backslash before double quotes, so I have added it in this format:

    \"-v 0x12d1 -p 0x14c1 -M 55534243123456780000000000000011062000000100000000000000000000\"

Nothing to do... it doesn't work!

    Regards,

    Gian

Only one info: in the old configuration (where K4505 works) I configured:

    USB Device Identifier: 0x12d11464

    USB Dial String: ATDT*99***1#

    no USB modeswitch

Now we have changed the USB Device Identifier to : 0x12d114c6 and added the USB modeswitch as you suggested.

In this new config USB Dial String field will be the same or I have to delete it?

    Best Regards

    Hi Gian

yes, dialstring should remain the same - the changes are the device ID and adding the modeswitch string.

    Hi Gian

Glad to hear it's working. The way I would usually find the parameters is to go to Google and search for hits on the usb_modeswitch website - in this case, this link turned up http://www.draisberghof.de/usb_modeswitch/bb/viewtopic.php?t=672

On that page we can see a discussion about the K4605 modem and what people had to do to get it to work. Sometimes you will see people post output like this:

    # cat /etc/usb_modeswitch.d/12d1:14c1

    # Vodafone (Huawei) K4605
    TargetVendor= 0x12d1 TargetProduct= 0x14c6 MessageContent="55534243123456780000000000000011062000000100000000000000000000"

in which case the deviceID to be added to the Aruba provisioning will be 0x12d114c6 and the modeswitch will need that string indicated as MessageContent. Two other items are needed to complete the modeswitch string, and that is the deviceID before it switches - that can be determined from the name of the file, in this case 12d1:14c1.

Hence, we can now form the modeswitch to be "-v 0x12d1  -p 0x14c1  -M555342431234567<snip>"

    regards

    -jeff

to recap for clarity in the solution, for a Huawei/Vodaphone K4605:

    USB Device Type option
    USB Device Identifier 0x12d114c6
    USB Dial String ATDT*99#
    USB modeswitch -v 0x12d1 -p 0x14c1 -M 55534243123456780000000000000011062000000100000000000000000000

    * Note that Huawei modems dont generally need a ttyUSB to be specified (defaults to ttyUSB0 which is what Huawei uses) and that Modeswitch should be entered from CLI with double quotes around the whole line.
