While deactivated, preemption is still working after failover

Hi guys,

I got two 7220 controllers in an Active-Master (Preferred) / Backup-Master (Backup) VRRP redundancy configuration. Pre-emption is NOT checked in the VRRP addresses. Preferred Master has a priority of 110, Backup Master has a priority of 100. When testing failover, the APs failed from Preferred Master to Backup Master perfectly. However, when Preferred Master came back online, the APs went back to Preferred Master. Again, Pre-emption is NOT checked and I cannot figure out why the APs went back to Preferred Master.

Controllers are running 6.2.1.5 code

I do not want the APs to go back to Preferred Master in a failover scenario. Any ideas why this might be happening?

Here the vrrp configuration :

PREFERRED-MASTER

master-redundancy
master-vrrp 101
peer-ip-address 192.168.1.10 ipsec 77db8ba3817b029922e150f79fcbbeeb8d68ca677bb30755
!
vrrp 101
priority 110
authentication PASSWORD
ip address 192.168.1.12
vlan 1
tracking master-up-time 30 add 20
no shutdown

BACKUP-MASTERr:

 master-redundancy

master-vrrp 101
peer-ip-address 192.168.1.11 ipsec 0464b861ed6ff4f3cc1c00dafa967be7f4bba843c12c78a7
!
vrrp 101
authentication PASSWORD
ip address 192.168.1.12
description "Backup-Master"
vlan 1
tracking master-up-time 30 add 20
no shutdown

Thanks!

Re: While deactivated, preemption is still working after failover

Additionnaly, number of license are different on the controllers:

Preferred Master : 100 licenses AP and PEF

Backup Master : 64 licenses AP and PEF

Re: While deactivated, preemption is still working after failover

Your config looks good.

I guess you've also already checked the "show vrrp" outputs on both before/after tests for anomalies?

Final suggestion is a cold boot of both controllers if not already done?

From there, probably best to log with TAC?

Kudos appreciated, but I'm not hunting! (ACMX 104)

Re: While deactivated, preemption is still working after failover

Thanks you The.racking.monkey for your answer,

Here is the results of the show vrrp command after the reboots of the preferred master

PREFERRED-MASTER

Virtual Router 101:
Description Preferred-Master
Admin State UP, VR State MASTER
IP Address 192.168.1.12, MAC Address 00:00:5e:00:01:65, vlan 1
Priority 110, Advertisement 1 sec, Preemption Disable Delay 0
Auth type PASSWORD, Auth data: ********
tracking type is master-up-time, duration 30 minutes, value 20
tracked priority 110

BACKUP-MASTER

Virtual Router 101:
Description Backup-Master
Admin State UP, VR State BACKUP
IP Address 192.168.1.12, MAC Address 00:00:5e:00:01:65, vlan 1
Priority 100, Advertisement 1 sec, Preemption Disable Delay 0
Auth type PASSWORD, Auth data: ********
tracking type is master-up-time, duration 30 minutes, value 20
tracked priority 100

I will try a cold boot of both controllers later in peak hours.

Also helpful:

show vrrp <vrid> statistics

show log system 50 | include vrrp

Would be helpful to see the transtition.

Re: While deactivated, preemption is still working after failover

Thanks you kdisc98 and sadams for your answers.

Fix the same priority for both controller sounds good for me. I see this in the Aruba User Guide

If VRRP preemption is disabled (the default setting) and all controllers share the same
priority, the first controller that comes up becomes the master.

I will try this and let you know if it has worked.

Thanks you
