device locator

Hello there,

I was wondering what you guys would use to physically locate and Access point.

Here is the current situation: We have a building (6 floors) with about 70 APs.

All of them are 105 but Airwave and the master controller show that there is a 65. When we refer to the plan and /or the port descroption on the switch , it is supposed to be let\s say at room X, but it is not.

Also note that half of the APs are not visible (hidden in the fake ceiling)

That said we need a tool to find it based on the MAC.

Any idea?

Re: device locator

If you have LLDP enabled on your APs, you can usually run a show lldp neighbor type command and it will show you the MAC address and AP name and what switchport it's plugged into.

Re: device locator

Gerry,

-  Create a new  Virtual AP and attach it to a new ap-group (call it test).

- Create an ap-specific profile for that AP that will only broadcast that virtual AP

- Look for the test SSID in the Air.

@ Cjoseph , Thanks a lot, we tried something similar by assigning a unique SSID that we already have. We can get as close as 2 classrooms wide ,.. but still nothing . we cannot find it :(

Re: device locator

Gerry_uottawa,

All I can think of is to use an ap-specific ARM profile to reduce the power to the minimum, so you will be as close to the AP as possible.
