Baseline for signal strength and SNR

Question

I have been working to try and come up with a standard "minimum requirement" if you will for wireless signal strength and Signal to Noise ratio. In other words, when I design WLANs in our schools what minimum signal strength and signal to noise ratio should I be trying to achieve?

This is not an area of expertise for me but I have come up with the following numbers for inside our buildings.

Signal Strength of -20.0dBm or better
Signal to Noise Ratio of >40.0dB or better

Do these numbers seem reasonable? Is there some sort of industry standard accepted values for Signal Strength and SNR? What should I be trying to achieve?

Answer

Signal strength goal for most deployments is -70dBm
For SNR I typically aim for 25dB
