I think that this has been asked and answered plenty but I am still having issues determining if it is possible to convert the AP-315 to an IAP, without a controller. I manage plenty of IAPs but just recently purchased some non-instant access points on ebay thinking that I could easily convert them to IAP.

    Any help is appreciated!

    Thanks

you can convert your AP-315s to IAP starting with AOS 8.6.0.0
there is a command called "ap convert" here is the link to the user guide

For this though does my AP need to be 8.6 before I can change it to IAP or can I change my AP to any IAP version greater than 8.6?

I am assuming the AP needs to be version 8.6 or greater. If that is the case then how do I go about finding the correct firmware to do the CLI/tftp upgrade?

Thank you for your help ariyap!

Important note from the documentation: APs converted using this feature will not be supported by Aruba. This command should only be used in lab or test environments.

It is definitely for a test environment.

So now I am completely off topic for the "controllerless networks" section that this post is in but you are saying I would need something like the Aruba 7005 mobility controller in order to update these access points to 8.6 and then I would be able to turn them into IAP?

    Thanks again!

I now have a controller but when I try to convert to instant mode I get an error "Command is not supported for this AP model". Any advice? I thought the AP-315 was capable of being an IAP.

    Thanks,

    CND5J0T9P9

In trying to do it through the CLI, show ap convert-status shows Failure Reason: AP have no provision rule (Activate).

it seems you are using "activate" option in that command. see if you can use tftp option instead
also what is the exact CLI command you are using

by the way do you see a hit on the TFTP server at all?
also see if you can add "no-pre-validation" at the end of the command.
