    Hello,

I've got (IAP 515s) plugged PoE into a HP 5406zl switch(10+ years old) (CAT6 network)

Radios won't come online, show as disconnected.

After days of faffing around I plugged the APs into a newer CISCO PoE and bingo radios come straight up.

Obviously the PoE isn't up to scratch on the 5406zl switch. Aruba technical suggest using AT power not AF power.
I don't have a budget for upgrading the switch so wanted to ask:

Has anyone managed to get a HP 5406zl to power 515 AP over PoE or shall I just give up?

Thank you so much for any answers!
    Leo.

Need a compatible 802.3at PoE+ module which I'm trying to source....

Can you just use a POE power injector back at the switch? This looks like a reasonably cheap solution.

Aruba offers those, but any standard 802.3at (class 4 or higher) POE injector will work.

Following the AP-515 datasheet, an AP-515 can work with 802.3af (class 3 PoE) when IPM is configured in the AP System Profile. Without configuring the IPM settings the AP will not come online. The IPM profile can configured with all radios enabled but need to disable the USB and second UTP interface.

    • When powered by 802.3af (class 3) PoE and with the IPM feature enabled, the AP will start up in unrestricted mode, but it may apply restrictions depending on the PoE budget and actual power.
    • What IPM restrictions to apply, and in what order, is programmable.•
    • Operating the AP with an 802.3af (class 3 or lower) PoE source and IPM disabled is not supported.

Off course you still need enough available PoE budget on your switch

    Hi All,

    Thanks for all the responses.
I ended up purchasing a refurbished module for 5400 switch. It's PoE+ so will support the 'at' class according to datasheet. Cost 80 quid so not too bad and keeps everything neat and tidy.

I'm really pleased that you can still get parts and firmware for the old HP 5400. Happy days.

Once installed and all sorted i'll post to confirm result.

    Thanks all,
    Leo.

    Hello,

Upgrading the PoE module worked. IAP 515 radios are all online running 'at' power negotiation.

After upgrading the PoE+ module the trick was configuring PoE settings: allocating usage and setting to maximum 31W. Post on Spiceworks help me with this.
