Hi Danny, I believe that googling a little bit (search for "calculating file's hash") will fully satisfy your learning desire.
What I generally do is (your mileage may vary considering the hash values available and the workstation's OS where you compute those hash values):
It's really a short mechanical process...if the hash values (computed versus published) match you are then sure that what you downloaded is exactly what was published.
This doesn't imply that there will not be issues with the downloaded file...think about the case where the published file is corrupted in origin (but the published hash values - nevertheless they are computed too - reflect it correctly)...or the case where sometime - it happened - the published Hash values are not computed correctly but the published file was OK (not corrupt)...that's to say that, at least, you know that your downloading process did not corrupt what was made available by the file publisher on its web site and your downloaded file is equal to the one that was published.
You can also use on-line hash calculators but for a hundreds MBytes file IMHO that is not a viable option (since you need to upload what you already downloaded).

Hi! glad you found the guilty part...a suggestion (I do that): always - always - always - again always - compute the downloaded file's Hash (MD5, SHA1 or SHA256 when available)...and compare it to what was officially published by the software provider (Aruba in this case)...no more headaches...or, at least, less headaches.

The issue has to do with a corrupt image that we were using to upgrade. What we downloaded previously was 689mb in size.
We went back to Aruba portal and downloaded the same image at 627mb in size and used it to upgrade successfully.

We clearly expect to see the USB as enabled and mounted and, just for the notice, the USB flash drive should be FAT16/FAT32 formatted with a single partition.
A second step would be to check what is inside the USB flash drive's filesystem.
Supposing an already mounted USB flash drive (once in ServiceOS Bash you could use the mount -l to see what was already mounted):
6300# start-shell <- this is needed to start the ServiceOS Bash
6300:~$ cd /mnt/usb
6300:/mnt/usb$ ls -la <- please report the output of this command
6300:~$ exit <- this is needed to exit from the ServiceOS Bash
Pay attention that your two actions are one the contrary of the other:
- copy primary usb:/filename.ext will copy the actual Firmware Primary Flash area of the Switch into the USB flash drive - which is the remote URL - using the filename.ext file.
- copy usb:/filename.ext primary will copy the filename.ext file (expected to be found) into the USB flash drive - which is again the remote URL - into the Firmware Primary Flash area of the Switch.
P.S. Please note that usb:/filename.ext is just a simple way for me to define the <REMOTE-URL> since you're using an USB.

As I said earlier I have been able to download the image for 6300M but not able to upgrade both primary and secondary image from the USB drive. The USB is enabled and well mounted. Below is what I see and nothing else. show images display the old image not the new one.

In the CLI you can grab a copy of the config by running the following. This can be scripted:
copy [startup-config or running-config] [tftp://server/file or sftp://server/file]
