Is it possible to create a policy-based routing entry on an HP 5406r2 L3 switch that:

1) Routes a certain set of source addresses/clients (this is possible)
2) Routes ANY IP traffic from these sources to a specific IP gateway (this is possible as well)
3) Has a lower metric than the normal static route entries in the L3 switch? (can't seem to figure this one out)

Any help is much appreciated.

Hi Rasmus, since you're speaking about Routing Metric (path cost), the lower number represents the better route. You asked if the PBR routing has "lower metric" than (so precedence over) the normal static routing entries in the L3 switch...it means that the reason you're asking that is because you want that PBR routing takes precedence over the static routing. Isn't it? or are you asking for the contrary?

If so, as Dustin explained, PBR will do exactly that...and - looking at the reason PBR should be implemented (as a mechanism to override normal routing matching particular conditions) - it looks pretty reasonable to me too. Doesn't it seem reasonable to you too?

I want to use the static routes on the switch and AFTER that (it there's no matches) use the PBR. Isn't that possible?

Hi Rasmus,

As Davide and Dustin already explained, PBR is looked at before examining the RIB. In this way PBR is taking precedence over the static routes.
So I believe that the answer of your question is: No, it is not possible.
