    Hi.

Is it possible to vsf stack different aruba models? think about 2930f and 2930m cause we are looking into the smartrate ports on the 2930m but the rest of you aruba switch are 2930f.

    Hello!

this question was already posted few times in the past, the answer is:

"No, it isn't possible to made a VSF stack mixing Aruba 2930F and 2930M".

Why? because VSF and Backplane stacking (respectively supported on and provided by Aruba 2930F and Aruba 2930M) are technology deployed on switch series that can't be simply "mixed" in a common stack (either VSF or Backplane).

The VSF - as a Frontplane Stack technology - made of Aruba 2930F is not engineered to accept any Aruba 2930M switches into the stack (no matter if VSF uses "standard Ethernet ports" as stack ports) and, vice-versa, a Backplane Stack made of Aruba 2930M switches will never see an Aruba 2930F able to join the stack simply because the Aruba 2930F switch series was not engineered with required hardware capabilities - ad-hoc Stacking slot, Stacking module and Stacking cables - to be able to join such of a Backplane Stack in the way required by the Aruba 2930M.

    To recap:

Aruba 2930F -> VSF made of Aruba 2930F Switch Series models as stack members.
Aruba 2930M -> Backplane Stack made of Aruba 2930M Switch Series models as stack members.

    Mix is not an option.

Is this the same for 6300 and 6300M ?

    Hi Dustin, no, it isn't.

I believe the M and F suffixes adopted on Aruba 6300 Switch series SKUs are only used to characterize models with a Modular versus Fixed approach about power supplies and fan units (and this more clearly than the same nomenclature on Aruba 2930M versus Aruba 2930F is capable of...where the M/F naming sets the presence/absence of the Stacking Slot and thus is the significant key and divergence point with regard to VSF approach).

Both Aruba 6300M and 6300F support, by means of ArubaOS-CX features, the VSF technology and so an ArubaOS-CX's VSF deployed on Aruba 6300M/F supports a stack formed by Aruba 6300M and/or Aruba 6300F mixed together (in any possible combination, I add).

That's to say that Aruba 6300M and Aruba 6300F differentiate from Aruba 2930M and Aruba 2930F with respect to that approach of VSF too.
