Hello Atif,
I strongly suggest you to read the entire AA Appendix "
Chassis Redundancy (5400R Switches)" of the "
Aruba 3810M/5400RManagement and Configuration Guide for ArubaOS-Switch 16.11" available
here and, before any HW deployment (hot inserting the additional MM), perform the update to latest
ArubaOS-Swith 16.11.0002 to be on the safe side.
On the AA Appendix, at some point, you will find this:
"
If another Management Module is hot swapped in (and here I add that "hot swap" means "hot insert", speaking about adding an additional secondary MM not replacing it) while there is an Active Management Module booted up (your scenario), the newly hot swapped Management Module becomes the Standby Management Module. No negotiating procedure is needed as to which module becomes the new Active Management Module because there is already a functioning Active Management Module. However, the following conditions must be met to determine if the hot swapped Management Module can become a Standby Management Module:
- The hot swapped Management Module must pass self-test
- Management module redundancy is not administratively disabled (using the "no redundancy management-module" command), if the Active Management Module's config file has the redundancy administratively disabled, then the hot swapped Management Module goes into "offline" mode.
In "NonStop switching" redundancy mode, the Active Management Module's files and features are synced with the Standby Management Module; heartbeats are sent back and forth, and the Standby Management Module is ready to quickly take over in the event of a switchover or a failure on the Active Management Module. In "Warm-standby" redundancy mode, the Standby Management Module partially boots up and heartbeats are sent back and forth with the Active Management Module."

Subject: Management Module added to a live switch
Hi Gurus,
We are planning to install a secondary management module to an existing 5406R switch. The switch is currently operational with a single MM. What would the process be to get this up and running on the switch. Anything to look out for? Is it as simple as insert the module during maintenance and the switch will put it on standby or the switch requires a reboot?
