To be honest, I think the less control you have over your edge, the more sense it makes to tunnel traffic. That is one of the benefits of tunneling traffic. But there can be exceptions. And with AOS10 you can run bridged, tunneled, and mixed (some clients bridged, others tunneled) from the same single control plane and management.
Reaching out to your local Aruba team to get you updated may be a good start.

Thanks Herman, Unfortunately we still have a requirement for bridged SSIDs in our environment - we hope this can be resolved when we move to smarter edge networking (the University is extremely federated in nature, so we don't have control over all edge networks, changes happen slowly!).
When you say it is "solved in AOS10" what do you mean by that?

Bridge mode on controller APs has been deprecated for as long as I know which is since at least version 3. Tunneled SSID is where the controller shows its value. The list of unsupported features in bridge mode that this post started with is a good indication. As well bridged SSID is even unsupported with more than 32 APs in one L2 domain so not very scalable.
If you want to bridge traffic at the AP, go for Instant. Or go for AOS10 where you can more effectively combine bridged/tunneled/mixed SSIDs in the same architecture. With AOS8 and below, you could configure bridged SSID because you need to in some cases, but the controllers have been designed to tunnel all of your traffic. That now is 'solved' with AOS10.
