The specs for the S3500 say "Dual internal, load-sharing hot-swappable redundant power supplies". Does this indicate that both power supplies in the switch are utilized simultaneously, or is this similar to Cisco's StackPower?
Here's some information on the operational modes of the power supplies:
The Mobility Access Switch supports three models of power supply units (PSUs).
350W PSUs—You can use the 350W PSUs for non-PoE models such as S3500-24T, S3500-24F, or S3500-
48T. You can also install two 350W PSUs for system redundancy.
600W PSUs—You can use the 600W PSUs for full PoE models such as S3500-24P or S3500-48P. You can
also install two 600W PSUs to create a larger PoE pool.
1050W PSUs—You can use the 1050W PSUs for full PoE models such as S3500-24P or S3500-48P.
So the answer appears to be no, this is not similar to StackPower. Rudundant power supplies allows for more PoE ports at any given time and keep the switch up in case of failover.
I'm not sure I follow some of the math, though. 600W PS results in 400W PoE pool, and 600W + 600W = 666W PoE pool?
You are correct, the power supply configuration in the S3500 is not similar to StackPower. As we have seen more more customers move to smaller IDFs since they are moving predominatly to wireless environments, we saw the demand for greater PoE density in the smallest footprint (1U), hence the S3500s with dual power supplies can support up to 689w with 600w supplies or 1465 with 1050w supplies.
Now these are new numbers as of AOS 220.127.116.11 because we were able to modify the distribution between the supplies. So with respect with your last question, we can pull the full PoE budget from the first supply but only 72.41% from the second supply and that is how you get the above. We wil update our datasheets to reflect the above change.
