What is the difference between the initial role, and the 802.1X Authentication default role? I know a bit about it, but would appreciate some clarification.

The initial role is assigned for unauthenticated clients (Open or PSK).   For authenticated networks, either the 802.1X or MAC Authentication default roles are assigned (can be overwritten by VSAs).
